I'm in the process of changing the oil in Blanche and have found white sludge under the oil filler cap and in the breather hose. The oil I've drained out of the car seems fine with no traces of the white sludge in it or in the oil filter. Is this something serious like a head gasket  - or just condensation?

Chris

PS. One of the carburettor mounting bolts was loose - would this have any bearing on the problem?

Condensation!! Do check that all breather hoses are clean and unobstructed. You may even want to remove the rocker cover and clean all the sludge out from underneath as it will be thoroughly coated with it. Do you use the car on short journeys? Normally you don't see sludge in cars that are used regularly and on longer journeys than the local ASDA!!

Hi Steve

We only got the car a couple of months ago and up to that time it had only done about 3000 miles in the previous year - so it looks like it probably did lots of short journeys. And it did live in Glasgow where it's always cold and wet!!!
