A friendly mechanic in southwest france

Hi all,
Nothing to do with renault but I just wondered if anyone one might be able to recommend a mechanic or advice for a friend. His 1988 (250000miles on diesel engine!) mercedes campervan has developed a knocking sound after an 8 hour drive. Its only there at idle or low revs but he's in Bilbao and wondering about the run up to cherbourg for the ferry. Obviously not much to go on but just thought I'd ask in case.

Try checking that all the pipes in the injection system are tight - years ago I remember driving a nearly new 308D that developed a loud knocking noise - the local Merc dealer came out found a loose pipe - problem solved, about 4 years and 300,000 miles later (stop / start driving) it was still going well.

thanks for that. I'll pass it on. He's made it to bordeaux with no further problem after the addition of some black bottle of stuff to the oil which lessened the knocking. so i guess its probably fine.
