Afraid to buy a Laguna

I am considering buying a cheap (£2990) old renault (51 reg 100 000 miles) laguna privilege 1.8 petrol. I have heard some very negative feedback about its reliability and faults. However, I was thinking that having done 100 000 miles this laguna must either be ok or it has an extremely patient owner (i.e if it is highly unreliable). BTW, is this price ok or should I be asking for less?

hi..as with all cars its a bit of a lottery when buying..some of the same model are trouble free and others troublesome..try to stack the odds in your favour by getting a check on the motor by the aa or rac. also look for full service history and reciepts for any work done...if poss find out who the last owner was and ask them about its history.

100,000 miles is on the high side for £2990..(at least to me) do a google search and check various garage sites etc for comparisons to see if it is.

having said all that i think the laguna is brill...a lot of car for your cash.

Thanks for the reply David. I have looked on ebay and www.autotrader.co.uk. It seems cheaper than all the lagunas sold at ebay but there are not enough in autotraders to compare them. www.Parkers.co.uk list the car at about £4000 but with only 30 000 miles on it. Is there some way to work out how much the car is worth at 100 000 miles?

a few site to check-out

have a wander through these to get an idea on prices...i still think 3 grand for a mota with 100,000 miles is steep...personaly i would say offer 2200 and aim for 2500

My dad has a 2.2 TD Laguna from 1996, and it has done over 240,000 km. One time the shoobelt (right word?) went, and another time the cooling of the engine failed. It's not faultless but I wouldnt say its worse than any other car. My dad is going to buy the new laguna, when it comes out next year or so, and i'm planning to buy this one from him, hoping to do over 300,000 km with it.
