air conditioning

I think I remember reading some R4's made in South America can come with air conditioning, and power steering too?.

Hi Alan, I can understand the need for air-con in very hot climates, but power steering? There can't be many small cars with lighter steering than a 4 can there.

'84~'86 Renault 4 GTL Master with A/C

Hello,

I actually had A/C on my long-missed 1st R4 back in Cali-Colombia, a VERY hot and humid city.
I purchased it from an A/C specialist, and the system was made locally by one of the suppliers of A/C parts and kits to Automotive Assembly plants such as Sofasa (Renault)

I clearly remember inside the cabin it was one of those universal blowers right under the passenger (right) side of the dashboard, while the Sanden compressor was mounted in front of the engine, right above the top of the transmission, with the pulley facing the engine, not the front of the vehicle, on a custom made steel bracket.
The reason for this arrangement, was so the bracket could be bolted directly to the transmission itself, with several longer bolts that replaced a few of the OEM transmission top bolts. There was another pulley somewhere else in the engine, so a conventional V-belt could propel the compressor.
It was in fact a modern A/C adapted to a the 1,025cc engine.

Even though the system was rather modern and efficient, it really limited the power available to the wheels every time it kicked in... (gut feeling: available power probably dropped 25%, but I may have had a large compressor) anyhow, a big No No for uphill driving, let alone with a full load of passengers.
I mostly drove on my own and the heat was a lot, so I didn't care too much.

Nowadays it'd be totally doable if you can fabricate the compressor bracket and source the parts. Probably better balanced with an engine upgrade to 1,300cc tough!

A couple nice additions to lower the seemingly always high in-cabin temperatures would be:

- Applying IR-blocking window tint all around. The R4 is the world's easiest car to tint, as all of the door windows come out easily, and they're flat!
This Foliatec tint for instance seems to provide up to 63% heat rejection, besides 99% UV protection: http://www.foliatec.com/foliatec/shop_index.jsp?channel=1&page=article.jsp&productId=17600&groupId=76

- If you still have the muffler inside the driver's front fender, moving it to the back would really lower cabin temperatures. Another option would be to apply some kind of heat-reflecting material inside that fender, or even all of the engine-side of the firewall.

Cheers!
