I am getting a new coil and I don't know if it's a ballast or non ballast on my 1971 renault4 R1123 doesn't say in the Hayes manual, looks like a white and grey wire to the positive .:!:
You can often get away with using ballasted coils on 6V cars as those coils tend to be 6V. The ballast is a resistor that reduces the voltage to the coil during normal running but is bypassed when starting to make really rubbish cars easier to start. The R4 of course doesn't need one.
