Hi all,
Having problems with setting up the timing on a 1986 R4 gtl 1128 1.1
The book say's the engine turns clockwise but the starter motor turns it anticlockwise
Which is the right way, ???

Can't seem to get the rotor arm to point to number 1 lead when the flywheel timing marks are inline
Any help would be appreciated.☹️

I'd reckon the starter motor would be correct! Are the HT leads plugged in to the correct spark-plugs? Is the flywheel timing mark the actual timing mark, or one for top-dead-centre?

Hi, yes plug leads are all ok 1342 firing order No1 cylinder nearest the front of the car and the flywheel timing mark is on 6btdc the right hand one out of the 2.

If the distributor has been removed or lifted up for any reason, the pinion at the bottom of the distributor shaft may have moved a tooth or two where is meshes with the camshaft. If so, lift the distributor complete, and rotate it a bit to get it close to the No 1 position that you want, bolt it back down nearest to wherever the teeth will mesh - then you should be able to fine-tune by rotating the body later as usual for strobe or static timing-setting.

And are you sure that the rotor arm is pressed down correctly in it's locator in the shaft?

The distributor had been removed to replace the points but it has concentric pins at the bottom so it can't only go in one way.
