Exhaust popping

It can be a number of factors, not least the back pressure caused by the exhaust design. If the engine is ticking over smoothly, the revs are at the correct level and the engine is otherwise behaving itself then the problem lies within the exhaust. Check that the system is gas-tight first and correct if it's not. A quick method is to put your hand over the end of the pipe & if it's gas tight you should feel a build-up of pressure. If you don't, you have a leak! Bear in mind that if it's not a standard exhaust & if the bore diameter and/or length are different to the standard then the pressure waves produced by the engine's exhaust gases may cause a different resonance to that designed by the manufacturer, which will produce a "booming" effect. Another more serious cause maybe a damamged exhaust valve, but I expect the car would not perform properly if this were the case.
