Hello!

I'm Gregory from Poland.
I own a green Renault 4 TL, Vera and at the moment we renovate it with my dad.
We are preparing it to a trip around Slovakian castles.
I called this project "Renault 4 Castle Tour 2007: Eastern Slovakia" :)
We drive in three or maybe four Renault 4's (three from Poland and one from Germany).
I hope that such castle-tour will gain on populatiry in the future and we will drive around castles of many countries around Europe.
We are planning to begin it in August (first of second week of August), so if someone is interested in, can join us :)
The trip has 1300 km on Slovakia and small part of Hungary.

I'm happy that there is such forum like that :)

Best regards,
Gregory Mazur

Welcome to the forum. I'd heard about the Slovakian castle tour. Sounds like it will be great fun.

I went to Slovakia with some friends in 1991. Here's a photo of our Renault 4 parked near Spisky Hrad. There's a page about our trip here.

I probably won't be able to visit, but when does it start and how long will the tour take? Do post photos of the trip.

Hello!

I read about Your trip to Slovakia some time ago :)
Spissky Castle will be the last and the most beautiful in the trip :)

It will take 7 days around western Slovakia and small part of northern Hungary.

We start at the first or second week of August (it depends on members of the trip).

Polish net-service about french cars offered sponsoring (badges, gadgets etc...). They also offered an photo-relation on their site (www.francuskie.pl), but I'm sure that I will do a special photo-relation in English on this forum :)

It would be great if someone more would like to go :)
I wrote about this project on hungarian, slovakian, czech, serbian, polish, and austrian forums, beacouse of small distance to Slovakia (the tour begins in western Slovakia...).

Below, there is a exact plan of the trip:

The trip is based on a frame of old castles in eastern Slovakia. We will visit 23 castles, that are:
1. Čičava ( http://www.castles.sk/cicava.php)

23. Zborov ( http://www.castles.sk/zborov.php)

As my friend "Maciek R4 (PL)" (he is registered on this forum under the same name) calculated, the whole route on Slovakia (and a small part of northern Hungary) will be a distance of 1116,60 kilometers (that is 693,82 miles), but in practice it will be around 1300 kilometers (807,78 miles).
The plan grants that the tour will last 7 days on Slovakia and north Hungary, but this is a theoretical time (without problems, accidents etc… hope that we will not experience that). Everybody must also add a time and route of getting to Barwinek border crossing (or other place of meeting the group).

Below, there is an exact plan of route of our tour.

Day 1 (127,8 kilometers / 79,4 miles)
At the morning we cross the Polish-Slovakian border in Barwinek. Then we drive road 73 / E371 to Svidnik. From Svidnik, we go something about 7 kilometers (4,3 miles), to crossing with road no. 557, where we direct on Stropkov. While driving 557, we will be passing a big lake (for 13 km / 8 miles !) on our right. That will be on the part Stropkov – Cicava. Then we arrive near first castle on our trip, in village Podčičva. After visiting Cicava castle, we direct on Humenne on road 558. In Humenne we turn right to village Jasenov, where we visit the second castle that has the same name as the village. After visiting Jasenov, we get back to Humenne and direct on road no. 74 to Brekov. In Brekov we visit third, and last castle in the first day of tour. After come back from hill with the castle, we direct to rest and sleep over the Zemplinska Sirava lake (it is also called East-Slovakian Sea). To the lake, we go first to Michalovce city by roads no. 74, and later 18. From Michalovce we direct on road no. 582, strictly to the lake.

Day 2 (123,7 km / 76,9 miles)
This day we begin with visiting Vinne castle, that is situated over the lake where we slept.
After that we go on road no. 582 to Michalovce, and next after 44 km (27,3 miles) on road no. 55 / E50 we reach small village Bidovce. On the route we will go by beautiful Dargovsky pass. In Bidovce, we turn left on road no. 576 to Bohdanovce. In Bohdanovce we enter road 552 and after 7 km (4,3 miles) we reach Slanecky Castle. After visiting the ruins, we back to road no. 552 and go to a crossing beyond village Zemplinska Nova Ves where we direct on road 553 to Slovenske Nove Mesto, which is over the Slovak-Hungarian border. We pass this city and still drive on 553. When we reach Vinicky village, we turn right and by roving on small country-roads we find Velky Kamenec castle, the last on the second day of the trip.
After visiting this castle, we search the place where we will sleep. The best place would be near Slovenske Nove Mesto, because in the morning we will pass the Slovak-Hungarian border there.

Day 3 (163,4 km / 101,5 miles)
This day is a Hungarian stage of Renault 4 Castle Tour. I decided to go on Hungary because we avoid passing big city Kosice, and by the way we visit three beautiful castles, in stunning nature park. After breakfast we pass the border in Slovenske Nove Mesto (or Satoraljaujhely in Hungarian  ). There we direct on second-type road on north. After 16 km (10 miles) in village Palhaza we turn to Fuzer village. It is very hard to tell how to get there because there are small roads, so exact plan of getting there will be shown on map earlier. In Fuzer we visit beautiful castle, from which we can see stunning view on Slovakia and Hungary. Next we come back to Palhaza and turn to Gonc. Whole route is situated on the border of nature reserve, so it will be beautiful. In Gonc we turn south to Vilmany, where we turn left inside the Zempleni Tajvedelmi Korzet it means Zemplin Reserved Area (kind of reserved park). After while we reach Regec, where we visit another beautiful castle. After that we come back to Vilmany and direct there south. Then we reach Boldogko-koujfalu where on our left we will see third (and last) castle in Hungary: Boldogko. After visit in Boldogko, we go back to the village we passed: Vizsoly where we turn left, and enter national E71. On E71 we drive till the Slovak-Hungarian border. Three kilometers from the border, in Sena village, we turn left to small roads, again to avoid the big city of Kosice . Then we go accordingly to Vel’ka Ida, Komarovce and Cestice. In Cestice we enter the road E58 direct Turna nad Bodvou.
In Turna nad Bodvou there is one of the most beautiful castles on our trip, but we will visit it on the next day’s morning. We will find there a camping or a place to sleep, but it will be relatively easy, because very close to Turna there is Zadielska pass, that is very popular destination of journeys.

Day 4 (172,4 km / 107 miles)
After breakfast we will visit Turna castle. Next we go to Krasnohorskie Podhradie village by road no. 50, and there we visit Krasna Horka castle. From Krasnohorskie Podhradie, we start one of longer routes in Slovakian realities (127 km / 79 miles). On road no. 50 we go till Lucenec. In Lucenec, we turn on road no. 71 to Filakovo. Filakovo is a city near border with Hungary, and there are three castles which we will see. In this area also, we will stay and sleep. In Filakovo, we will see the first of three castles. Then we leave the city with road no. 571, and we arrive in Hajnacka. There we visit ruins of another castle (optional, because there are a little of castle, but it is on nice hill… so if there will be to little time, we wont visit it).
After that, we go back to Filakovo, and we go south to Radzovce village. From Radzovce, we go to Obrucna. There we visit Somessky Castle. There is beautiful view of Hungarian part of mountains (with castles on the hills!). All these castles are in the natural reserve Cerova vrchovina, so the landscape will be just stunning! Somewhere there we will stay at night.

Day 5 (189 km / 117,4 miles)
At this day, reveling and driving with watching landscapes will weigh down visiting castles. There are only three castles in the plan (two are to visit, one - Kezmarok is to a quick view).
But landscapes and driving our small wonders will reward us it ! We will drive many kilometers on the borders of famous Slovensky Raj National Park, Muranska Planina National Park, and on the front of us there will be stunning view on Tatra mountains.
Moreover this will be the longest distance driven on one day .
Shortly after breakfast, we start our trip north. In practice we will move from Hungarian border to Polish border .
We leave Filakov with road no. 71, and in the Lucenec we turn to road no. 50. Directly before village Rimavska Sobota, we turn on road no. 531. We drive this road and stop at Muran, where we visit a beautiful castle on the hill. After 14 km (8,7 miles) in Cervena Skala we enter the 66 and then after 11 km (6,8 miles) we turn on road no. 67. We pass the city of Poprad, and stop for a while to see a castle in Kezmarok. After 7 km (4,4 miles) of driving 67, we turn to road no. 77. There is written on my map, that this road has outstanding sightseeing values! Probably the reason is a view of Tatra mountains, that will stretch on our front left for about 26 km (16 miles). Then we arrive in Stara Lubovna, where is one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia. After visiting it, we will have to find a place to stay and sleep.

Day 6 (154,4 km / 96 miles)
This day, we will visit four castles. Moreover we will pass near one of the biggest castles in Europe, Spissky Castle. We start this day driving road no.68 to Plavec, where we will visit first castle. Next after 35 km (21,8 miles) we stop and visit Saris castle. From Saris, we go to Presov, and there we direct on road no. E371 or R4 . After 5 km (3,1 miles) we stop at Kapusany village, where we go to the castle with the same name Kapusany.
After this visit, we go back to Presov, and next we go by road no.18 to Spisskie Podhradie. While driving 18, we will see the stunning view of Spissky castle, and there we MUST stop to make photos with our small beauties in the foreground and Spissky castle in the background  In Spisskie Podhradie, we turn on road no. 547, and after 9 km (5,6 miles) we turn right and enter road no.536. After driving 11 km (6,8 miles) we reach Markusovce village with small castle. That will be last castle on this day. We will sleep probably in one of many campings near Spissky castle, or National Park Slovensky Raj.

Day 7 (185,3 km / 115,14 miles)
This day is a pearl in our trip. We will visit the greatest castle in Slovakia, and one of the biggest in whole Europe ! Spissky Castle 
After breakfast, we can visit also Sans-Souci chapel on one of the hills near castle, or see Spiska Kapitula old churches and town centre. After visiting Spissky castle, we will rove in the area to make some photos of our cars etc…
Next we will go to see Zborov castle on our way to Barwinek. To make that, we leave Spisskie Podhradie by road no. 18. In Presov we enter road no. 545. We can stop at Bardejov, beautiful XIV cent. city with old city, marvelous church and remaining of town walls.
We leave Bardejov on road no. 77, and stop near Zborov castle. That will be the last castle in our trip. After that, we go by 77 to Svidnik and 73 to Barwinek, and we are in Poland, where our trip ends.

As I mentioned, that will be all 1300 km (808 miles), but everybody have to add to petrol calculations a distance of getting from home to Barwinek in Poland.
When we will know who will join the trip, we will try to make a plan of meeting before Barwinek. Slovakia is a hilly country, so please include it in your calculations.
My friend Mack, suggested what to take to be safe 
