Hello and a warm welcome to Renae!

She is a 1986 (13/02) Renault 4 GTL 1108 CC in silver. Currently looking for a new partner in crime, or whatever you fancy. Now my imagination is running away with me, thoughts of what she would be like as a getaway car? Not good I would think. Certainly not a Cannes jewel thieves choice.

She has been recently MOT’ed (mid-June), taxed for 6 months from May and her mileage is 124,100 (believed to be genuine, consistent from past MOT paperwork).

Renae was owned by only one previous keeper, a delightful old lady from Guildford who counted her as another family member. It has been primarily for those reasons I have been loath to sell her. But quite frankly I cannot justify keeping her for the 100-500 miles she has been driven annually over the past 3-4 years. The car has been stored in a barn until recently but is now parked outside my home in Chiswick, West London (W4). The last big road trip I did in her was to Thenay for the 50th anniversary celebrations. I myself am often sceptical when I read reasons for sale here or anywhere for that matter, but in this case I do not have the time or skill even to keep her in the life she should become accustomed to!

Since buying her in 2009 I have spent approximately £3,000 restoring her to a solid condition to enjoy (at my local garage and Renospeed).
Summary of works undertaken:

  • Remove rear
  • axle and weld strengthen mounting points to axle.
  • New ignition coil
  • Both front and rear bumpers acid dipped and painted white.
  • Install new brake pipes
  • Fit new steering rack
  • Fit new track rod ends
  • Weld both sides front floor pan corners
  • New battery
  • Clean and adjust brakes
  • Dismantle and rebuild steering rack
  • Replace n/s driveshaft
  • Replace gear lever bracket, bushes and spring
  • Fit two new genuine headlights
  • Glue on new door rubbers
  • Weld and tidy inner rear wheel arch both sides.
  • Replaced all ignition HT leads
  • Replaced all points, condenser, distribution cap.
  • Bumpers resprayed.
  • New grille installed
  • Door cards recovered in snooker velvet.
  • Hammerite applied to all floor wells.
......Plus several other small jobs

As with most Renault 4’s she gets noticed and I have certainly enjoyed the attention/comments she has received over the years. The stickers on the bodywork are individual and I appreciate perhaps it’s not to everyone’s tastes but they are vinyl and should be easily removed, if desired of course.

There are many good things to say about the car but I do also believe in giving a balanced picture. The following points should also be considered:
  • The lacquer coating over the bodywork paint is in several places peeling. Mostly on the driver’s side. I have tried to show this in the pictures as best as I could but she should be seen for a good appreciation of the condition. I actually see it as a redeeming feature that adds further character to the car.
  • The heater fan has been disconnected at some point. I do recall it working but the car never suffered from lack of warmth when I drove it so I did not look to reconnect it. I believe it is a simple task although may require the casing taking off briefly.
  • When I bought the car there was a very small water leak/drip to the drivers foot well. However, since the car was repaired 3 years ago it has not reoccurred with exception on very heavy downpours. All welding on the car has been treated with Waxoyl
  • As the car has been driven so little it now struggles to start. It ran okay only two weeks ago for the MOT and I suspect it is down to a poor spark / ignition coil. There are two spare that I have picked up a year ago that could be tried.
  • I am in the process of renewing the exhaust mountings as one failed recently. As soon as they arrive in the post they will be fitted. They are coming from the German specialist Franzose.
  • There is a radio to go with the car. Unfortunately not the original one although it works perfectly fine. This is resting on the floor as I never wanted to install it, and it was handier to disconnect it when the car was parked.

With the car I do have the usual odd spare parts (ignition coils, side window, waxoyl, spare leads, wipers etc) general bits and bobs to offer, and a couple Renault 4 manuals, plus various documents giving detail on the history of the car and its maintenance (not comprehensive but pretty good).

I am frequently travelling on business but have a window of two weeks where most evenings I can be free and would certainly encourage viewings (w/c 5th onwards). I will try to check emails/inboxes as often as I can to respond to any questions.

I really do want to find Renae a good home and sincerely hope it is through the forum than through other means as I know there are so many great people on here.

I highly recommend a viewing!!! Oh and the all important question price, well I am open to offers but would like to achieve close to £1,400.

I look forward to hearing from some of you who may be interested!
