Having retro fitted a temp guage recently i was intrigued to find this very clever mod for a GTL on a german R4

Apart from ordering a bratwurst mit pommefrites and eine bier bitte, I didn't understand a word of that, however I thought the water temperature sensor directly into the water pump is the way I'll go when my Chinese water temperature gauge arrives.
