Xantia dissapointment

So i took the plunge this week and decided my AX was now too small for the work i am using it for and have bought a Xantia 2.0L HDi saloon, the AX is with a friend.

I have driven the Xantia to London and back and i can't say I'm that impressed with it. Yes the brakes are strong but the suspension is nothing like a BX which is what i thought it would be, partly why i bought it really, that and it has a tow bar so i thought it would tow well.

The suspension feel almost like its a normal car over pot holes, better over sleeping policemen but i remember the BX used to be much softer and lurch up and down when you braked and pulled off.

I want these features again so i think the Xantia will be be going once i can find a BX turbo diesel. Rare now though.

Shame, but this modern one is no competition for the classic.

They are set up firmer than older Citroens, because many owners / magazines were always complaining abouth the mushy ride...
Or may it just be that the spheres have lost some of their gas pressure?

I can understand that, it's just stiffer than I expected (no pun intended) I will as my local Citroen garage about the spheres.

The C5 is quite soft, underated and cheap.

Some examples with estimates for your digestion!

I find then reliable as long as you do not mind a dash board looking like a Christmas tree.

Avoid ex taxis.

Thank you for all that. I only bought it because we had such a hot journey down to the Vendee that i said i would get something with aircon and it had to be citroen.

Anyway spoke to the garage and it turns out it has beefed up anti roll bars...

It doesn't have the Activa suspension as well does it?

That was pretty amazing at the time, but wasn't that compliant a ride IIRC.

Could you "unbeef" the roll bars? perhaps a set off a petrol engined car (alloy block in front so would have lighter bars to start with.

I will check the hand book Pepper. Thanks. Not impressed with the supposedly re gassed air con or blower either.

I have however just found out the garage next door to my friend has a BX 1.9d in with hyd oil leak and the owner doesn't want to pay to fix it so i am hoping he decides to scrap it and it will be offered to me.

I wanted a BX in the first place. Cheap Xantia anyone?

Oh and I'd never have another oleo-pneumatic car again that didn't have anti lock brakes, far far too easy to lock them up in an emergency!

Just my personal point of view, its hard enough cadence braking in an emergency with a normal:: brakes system, in a Citroen your basically pushing a button, trying to not push it hard when you're shitting yourself is top damm hard,.

I crashed the one car and scared my self silly in a couple of others. I love the citroen system but only with ABS.

Well pepper, I have now very happily purchased a lovely white BX diesel estate. It's perfect, just the ticket, back has more room in it than my long wheel base land rover, room for everyone plus the sink! Shame it's not turbo though, I think the pump will be getting tweaked pretty soon

Lovely, I loved running my old BX's, cheap as chips to buy and relatively easy to maintain!

Tweaking the pump is a good idea, I never had any issues with the non turbos being "that" slow though.

The guy must have at least 10 kicking around, 1.4 1.6 1.7td with ABS 1.9d.

I offered him the Xantia but he declined it so its going onto that famous auction site this week and i am going back to R4 whilst the BX comes in for full service, cam belt etc and valet.

Xantia sold. Still awaiting log book though ... Using the French R4 until the BX is done oh and the traction of course.
