steeringwheel play ?

Hi, when I grip the steering wheel and lift it there is about 1/2 an inch play as it moves up and down and I am pretty sure it is not supposed to do that !
Is there a bush or a bearing that I need to replace somewhere, if so where and is it an easy job ?
I found this on ebay but not sure if it is what I need as I don't speak Italian :oops: 170487011493
Any suggestions appreciated ;)

Which way is 'up and down' - towards the driver and back, or towards the roof and floor?

If it's to the driver and back, then it's unlikely to be a bush issue. There's a flexible disk connecting the steering column to the steering box and these can get sloppy. That could allow movement along the length of the column. It'll also mean the steering is sloppy as you turn the wheel back and forth. It's easy enough to change the disks as long as you can get spanners on the four nuts and bolts.

Thanks Geoff but its the other way :eek:
Its towards the roof and the floor...... which is quite bad when your cornering as it feels like your driving one of those kids things that clip to the back of a seat ! the outer shaft is held firmly but the inner steering shaft is flopping about inside
 
It looks like there is either a bush or a bearing near the top of the column and the numbers are
77 01 348 974 and 77 03 066 234.....anyone ever replaced these ? or know if they are available anywhere

You are referring to number 3, and 4 on exploded view of steering column?

3 is just rubber bush. Goes on upper and lower end and holds steering rod in place
And 4 is just metal o-ring that holds upper rubber in place.
Not planing to change them on mine column.

I do not have pictures of that parts, forgot to take pictures when dismantling mine
 
I think no. 3 is a rubber bush with a brass (bush) insert but I cant find anywhere that has them for sale ?
 
Did not even tried to find them. Mine are alright and going back in place.

you could try to find someone in Cyprus that is manufacturing rubber bushes, or flexible engine mounts for boats.
Maybe they can make you one according to drawing or specimen.

Or you can find some late machine and use plastic material (not plastic shopping bag) to made it.
I have used PA6 poliamid for making some bushes on front sway bar.
 
My steering wheel squeaks when I turn... is there any rubber to replace or do I have to grease somewhere?

Hi Azazello
Mine squeaked as well, so I sprayed silicon oil into the shaft (under the steering wheel) and it worked. It hasn't squeaked again in the last 3 years.
Silicon is fine for rubber, but don't use grease as its petroleum based and will damage the rubber bush
 
Only place where it can squeak is that rubber bushes (No3 on Cyprus Andy's picture)
Only there is contact between steering shaft and rest of steering housing parts.

The rubber bush has a brass/copper bush in the center which is in contact with the shaft, and is only supported with the rubber around the mounting...This bush is what has worn on mine I think or possibly the rubber has perished in the heat and is not holding the thing tight :(
 
Thank you all, next time I take off my dashboard I will provide a good dose of silicone spray (that I should already have somewhere in the garage)
 
I had some trouble with my car but did not want to strip the column so just pushed a second hand bush off another car down the shaft, the bearing surface is brass and the rubber is serrated to take up the inner surface of the column

No I still have the problem :(.......I tried the link for Portugal which is more expensive to buy but they dont have any English on there and also no post to Cyprus :( ....franzose are not even an option as the post to here is even more than the item costs to buy....:eek:
