Gearbox oil

Hi, I recently changed the box oil on my 82 F6 (filled to the bottom level of the filler plug and have noticed aa small amount leaks from the lefthand driveshaft. I again removed the plug as I thought there maybe a little too much oil in the box but it was correct - does this type of box (HAO-163) have seals where the driveshafts enter that could be worn?

Any help would be great.

Yes Matt, there are seals. Drain oil, remove drive shaft, undo bearing retainer lock, make dot punch on retainer and gearbox casing, undo bearing retainer using a suitable tool and count the exact number of turns, remove oil seal and rubber sealing ring, throughly clean up and replace with new seal and ring. Lightly grease the rubber bits and replace the retainer the exact number of turns on removal and line up the dot marks. Replace the shaft etc and don't forget to re-fill the gearbox with oil!!! Do one side at a time.

Useful tip - If you tilt the car at an angle you won't lose so much gear oil.
 
That's great - again thanks Steve - I'll have to find some seals then (really only one but would prefer to do things like this in pairs) - any ideas where to look (eBay etc) and the part No. ?

You'll have to go to Renault for these parts - they are not too expensive. Whatever you do don't cut corners because there is nothing worse than doing this type of job and finding there are still leaks!!! If you feel like re-using the rubber ring on the retainer - well don't. By the way, do you have a Haynes manual?? Very useful if you are doing your own repairs.

Hi, No I don't have a Haynes manual for the R4 yet (only had it 3 months) but I have bought one for all of my past cars - I do however have an old english R4 workshop one and a French version (called a Revue Technique) which is OK

I just thought it would be good to ask on the forum as it's good to chat, could help others and sometimes is just as quick as opening the manual:)

I hope the Renault garage's here still have these sorts of parts (R4's are common where I live but most things seem a pain to get).

Steve, sorry to keep mithering you but do you know the actual size of the seals ? I have found a seller selling them for a R5 on eBay (fasttrackbearings), I asked them if they could get them fot the R4 giving him the details of my car but he wants to know the size.

36x54x7,5. (no problem if the thickness is 8mm) This is a commonly available size and any hardware/bearing shop should carry them, don't bother with Renault dealers!

Thanks for that angel - you don't know by any chance the dimensions of the other rubber sealing ring do you (not sure of their exact names - Steve I think said there are two seals per side?)

Matt, there is one oil seal and one sealing ring per side. I don't know the dimensions of the sealing ring as I bought mine from Renault, fitted the parts and moved onto other jobs.
Even if you save few pence on the oil seals, you'll still need to buy the sealing rings from Renault - unless you remove the old ones and spend ages and lots of petrol hunting around for something that fits.
I really would advise you buy these parts from Renault, they will be the correct parts and will fit first time - no oil leaks and job done!!!
 
Steve, don't worry I am not one to skip on quality or to buy something from somewhere else just to save a few quid - I haven't yet had time to get to my nearest Renault dealer (but have sent them an email) but in the meantime I have tried to track them down on the net and this is when I came accross the seller on eBay, I most probably will get them from Renault but thought it might be worth a look.

That "sealing rings" are simple O-rings worth 50 cents each!!! (OK, do yourself a favor and buy Viton ones, they are hair-rising expensive at 2 euros each!)
Haven't made a note of their dimension yet (I have something like 104x3 on the back of my head), take one with you on a bearing shop and they will measure them.
As you work on the gearbox, don't forget to check the breather nipple (located near the speedometer cable). Remove it, take the plastic cover off and check that it is clear, otherwise you will have oil leaks in short time.

Thanks for all the Info Angel - thats great - I have all ready checked/cleaned the breather.

I am not sure though if there will be a bearing shop near me though as I live sort of in a rural part of southern France and most unusual items are hard to find (thank god for eBay:D) - if you know where i could possibly get some mail order that would be great and if you could possibly find out the exact dimensions as I use the car daily and would like to get the parts before I start dismantling if possible?

Hello F6froggie,

How did you get on with this job? I now find myself in deepest La France Profonde (dept 66) with the exact same problem on our 1120 with the fourspeed box.

Hi David, I've just noticed your post:shock:

I found some O rings of the correct overall diameter in the states but when they arrived and were fitted I found that the rubber was a little too large in diameter and I could not screw the collar back in all the way.

I then purchased a long length of O ring rubber and made my own - the ends were glued together with flexible super glue. This coupled with the driveshaft seals has cured the problem :D
