Belt replacement

Hello R4 friends,

I was driving home after a short trip around central London when, just as I pulled into my street, the battery warning light came on, followed quickly by the temperature warning light.

Luckily, I was already home, so I turned the engine off straight away. After opening the bonnet, I found that the lower of the two belts had failed and was torn (see photo below).

The car had been stored for many years, so I suspect the belt could be around 15 years old.

The vehicle is a 1984 GTL model, and I’m now trying to source the correct replacement belt. The existing belt is marked DAYCO 10A0650C, but when I search for this code, it sometimes comes up listed for a Renault 5.

However, when I tried to order a 10A0650C belt via eBay, the seller contacted me to say it was not the correct part for my car based on the registration number.

So my questions are: Is 10A0650C actually the correct belt size for this car? If not, what is the correct belt specification? And where would you recommend sourcing the correct, good-quality replacement belts?

Thanks for your help,

Rory

I appreciate your old one's somewhat chewed up, but is it not possible to measure it & therefore compare with the one offered for sale? Bear in mind that the belt's tension is adjustable, so a belt a few mm bigger could be catered for in the tensioner. Although this is a "bit late" to hear this, always carry a spare belt or 2 in the car. If, once you've ascertained which belt IS the right one, buy two-and be prepared!

Thanks all,

I guess I'm just trying to work out if the belt that's perished is the correct size in the first place. I've ordered a new one of that size and code, but the company I have bought it from online has suggested it's the incorrect size for the car...

I went to see local motor factor this morning, and although they don't have the part, they said 10 x 650 is apparently correct on their system when they type my registration number in.

I realise there is two belts, so is 10 x 675 maybe the larger belt size? (mine is in tact currently, but will buy a spare of that too!)

Will check tensioner pulley rotates - thanks for this tip.

Thanks,

R

Hi Rory
The Renault parts book gives the alternator belt as 7700619572.

Hi Andy,

Thank you very much for these links.

I have ordered two of each of these belts. As you suggest Andre, good to have spares!

I will wait for them to arrive and then attempt to fit one of the new 10X625 alternator belt.

Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to answer here - I always appreciate the support of the forum members.

You're welcome!
There's a good guide to changing the belts here:
