    60 year birthday celebrations

I'm planning to go too plus I have an invitation to a friend's 50th birthday party in the Tarn region (actually it will be his 51st - this year was cancelled). But I'll probably go from Newcastle to Amsterdam to avoid the torture of the M6, etc. (or perhaps Rosyth as a campaign to reinstate that...

Coasting in gear vs putting in neutral

The freewheel in the SAAB 96 persisted into the 4 stroke version powered by a Taunus V4. An added facility made possible by this was clutchless gearchanges. However my first SAAB was the first model of 99 and this also had a freewheel despite there never having been a 2 stroke version...

    What a great everyday car!

Good suggestion about the bonnet release - I usually just go for a walk while my car is being tested but in the case of the R4 I got a phonecall halfway asking how to release the bonnet........

    Good Book on R4

I found this on Amazon a couple of years ago - it’s a cracker if you can read French (a lot easier than conversing!).

    Petrol Overflow

Thanks for these comments. Something to be aware of in future.

    Petrol Overflow

A week ago I filled up the tank; not over filled, just to the pump’s first cutoff. I drive 28 miles and park in my driveway, pointing up the slope (about 1 in 5, is that 20%?). Some time later the car starts to dribble petrol out of the petrol cap. So I assume the petrol has warmed up and...

    Wheel repair

After a bit of lateral thinking - Saturdays are good for that - can you not just drill a new hole for the valve and plate over the old hole (on the outside)?

    Water Temperature Gauge

Happy to report that infrared temp sensor failed to detect any meltdown condition in the top hose or radiator so I’m back to trawling my collection of OS maps for proving runs (for R4 and for GoPro) prior to an assault on the North Coast 500!

Drilling holes in footwells - to give water somewhere else to go.

I had a problem with drips in the passenger footwell - the remedy was to seal round the edges of the external grille on the ventilation flap.

    Water Temperature Gauge

Not wishing to raise the temperature any further let me just add that I have ordered an external temperature sensor in order to confirm my conclusion that all must be well given that thermostat and radiator sensor appear to be working correctly. And let me just repeat that fitting the gauge...

    Water Temperature Gauge

Thanks - already done that and switch has green light which comes on when the fan is triggered by the radiator sensor or by the switch - good to have in an R4 when it can be difficult just hearing the fan coming on.

    Water Temperature Gauge

I agree that the gauge has to be suspect - the red zone is 100C plus so given that both thermostat and radiator sensor seem to be working as they should (at 88 and 85 respectively) I've bought another gauge to try once it stops raining........ if that doesn't make a difference then I'll invest...

Head restraints wanted for my 1986 GTL

Quite a while ago the recommendation on this site was to use Rover 600 headrests which fitted perfectly - which I did, got a pair on eBay but there might not be that many about these days. But there must be other candidates.......

    Water Temperature Gauge

An update on how my temperature saga is going - now replaced the thermostat and the radiator sensor and while the temperature sensor position isn't ideal (downstream from the thermostat) it does at least show me clearly that the thermostat is opening. But the gauge is still registering high in...

    Refitting front torsion bars

Sometimes when I look at my R4 it seems to be not sitting level at the front, lower at the driver side. Could this be the result of it possibly only ever having one occupant, and the driver side torsion bar is a bit tired and in need of adjustment?

    Water Pump for 782cc R4

Hi Cooper. Based on a weight of 1.8kg, UK mail costs are £12.95 for economy (42 days!), £19.22 for 6-7 days, or £21.22 for 6-7 with tracking. If you want to go ahead we can continue the conversation via the messaging facility.

    Water Temperature Gauge

So my 88C thermostat opens at about 99.5C. Doesn't seem right. I'll replace it.

    Water Pump for 782cc R4

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I’ll be happy to see it go.

    Water Temperature Gauge

So after a couple of beers I’ve decided to stick with the current arrangement for now (given that this year probably won’t allow any serious R4 adventuring) and then in the depths of next winter I’ll drill into the water pump and thread a mounting for the sensor in the part of the pump casting...

    Water Temperature Gauge

Good point, Angel, on sensor placement. But possibly not a good idea to move the thermostat down the hose towards the radiator (to make room for the sensor adapter) which was my first thought? And yes sensor and gauge came together as kit.
