    The Sage Saga

This morning, after 10 years of very intermittent restoration activity (and retirement didn't help as it coincided with becoming a grandparent) I finally set off down the road for the MOT station - but didn't get very far, or beyond second gear, as a howling noise started to come from under the...

    Trip from Austria to Scotland

When you disembark from the ferry in Newcastle you will be facing north - so just keep going in that direction! There are two main roads from the Newcastle area to Edinburgh - the A1 via the coast, quickest but fairly boring and the A68 which takes you into the Borders region where you can...

    Trip from Austria to Scotland

You will be most welcome in Torphichen - almost the centre of Scotland - where we dispense tea, coffee, R4 help, and lots of advice on where to go and what to see in this wonderful country!

    Flaming headrests.

My GTL left the factory without headrests but now has them courtesy of a Rover 600 which fit perfectly. Maybe not so available on fleabay now as they once were though?

    Driveshafts

I have a driveshaft query - I am replacing the outer cv joint gaiters because they looked tired, not that there were any leaks. The near side one which I tackled first just needed the grease topped up and repacked. The offside one is different - it was oil-filled and my first thought is just to...

    steering rack gaiter easy fitting

I can report that the outer driveshaft gaiters are very easy to fit with the help of the plastic cones and liberal amounts of grease. I'm now making rapid progress towards an MOT, having replaced front ball joints, track rod ends, steering rack gaiters, tie rod bushes, anti-roll bar outer...

    steering rack gaiter easy fitting

I bought a pair of driveshaft gaiters off eBay recently - not fitted them yet but they came supplied with a plastic cone each to ease the installation.

    hello

Bonsoir Phillippe, Welcome! I'm not too far away, just outside Linlithgow. I hope to get my R4 back on the road next summer - I actually bought it off a man in Bridge of Weir, not far from you. Gordon

    Brake Pipe Replacement

Thanks for this info, mojobaby, as bad as I expected but could be worse! I'm already thinking spanner + blutac + nut to reassemble without removing the tank again but that might just be misplaced optimism.........

    Brake Pipe Replacement

My compensator valve - a right mess with corroded pipe unions (three pipes involved - pipework is ok, mainly copper, but destined to be cut for expediency). This, plus a nearside gearbox oil seal, is what will prevent me from getting the car back on the road anytime soon (everything else is good...

    Brake Pipe Replacement

Thanks all for the advice. I'm going to invest in Adam's suggested flaring tool and give it a go. Meanwhile I had already found the same retaining clips that Paul had, and I am starting at the back so the compensator valve connections are a looming challenge!

    Brake Pipe Replacement

Brake pipes are the current focus of my GTL renovation - it already has some replacement copper pipes but needs new hoses and so far I haven't managed to separate any pipe to hose connections cleanly. So it now needs some replacement pipes. Now I've never previously made up my own brake pipes...

    These rear quarter panel interior

My GTL is missing these panels. Has anyone managed to make a cardboard template in situ before transferring to mdf?

    Petrol Tank Replacement

An update - finally got round to removing the petrol tank (a direct result of having now retired and with time to crack on with getting my R4 back on the road) but found it to be in good condition. When I bought the car the owner mentioned that the tank weeped petrol when full but I suspect the...

    Fuel Tank Repair

I intend replacing my leaking original tank with a modern plastic tank from a Ford Fiesta. It will encroach on the spare wheel space to a degree but it means goodbye to corrosion problems and it provides more capacity. Expect updates over the summer months - I retire at the end of June. :-)

Renault 4GTL 1128 Rear Brakes Girling or Bendix?

This sounds like the issue I was faced with - externally the back brakes on my 4GTL looked like Girling but on the inside they were Bendix. I made the mistake of assuming that they were Girling and spent long hours finding new Girling backplates (with their characteristic drain aperture) - the...
