    Rodeo Recommissioning

Cowl is plastic, too, and a bit tricky to fabricate, I think. I have both the cowl and the plastic fan if you can't source them locally.

    Rodeo Recommissioning

Do you have the fan cowl fitted? I don't see it anywhere on your pictures and it's a must. Also, try to find and fit the later plastic 6-blade fan - this was the hot mod (well...cool anyway!) for the small engine R4s to cope with our hot weather.

    Bubbling expansion bottle !

It's a simple rubber ring 2-3mm thick that can be cut from rubber sheet in two minutes, there is nothing to go wrong there. Check that top of glass bottle, where this seal sits is OK, otherwise fault lies at valve itself. It can be checked and repaired fairly easily by drilling the rivets that...

The AFR meter is one of the most useful tools I've ever had. It eliminates guesstimating when doing jobs like carburettor change or setting up an engine with different camshaft etc. I have loads of Solex jets, main, idle and air, if you can't find them there. Let me know what are you going to...

Collapsable steering column std or just for Sweden?

It was standard equipment to Swedish market R4s since 1970 model year. French R4s had the two piece steering column fitted two years later, while other export countries received it in 1979.

Little bars on the front of the bumper?

All of my four R4s have them fitted as standard!

/150 and /97 gearboxes are suitable, too.

    4CV CARB PROBLEMS

This is not an accelerator pump, it is a weakening or enrichening device (depending on carburettor) operated by vacuum inside the carburettor. It will affect idling if punctured or stiff, so even if it has been replaced, check that the faces of both the carburettor and its cover are perfectly...

Mission change: Renault 5 engine (688E7/13) into Renault 4 TL

Porsche gearbox final drives are helical bevel gears (if the box is similar to Beetle one) and can be safely flipped over. I would be curious to see gear tooth wear on a hypoid pair of gears that turns at the wrong direction. One additional problem would be to find a 5 speed gearbox with a...

Renault 4TL carb and electronic ignition

You have the small 845cc distributor and you may find that some electronic ignition kits will not fit inside. R5s and later 845 R4s were equipped with the larger diameter Ducellier unit, similar to those fitted on GTL engines. You may have to fit one of them but be careful, spindle drive is...

    Renault 4 gearbox identification

Yes, anything having a bellhousing is for the Cleon engine (right hand turning). However you may end up with a less than perfect final drive ratio if you don't pay attention to the 3 digit suffix.

Mission change: Renault 5 engine (688E7/13) into Renault 4 TL

This has been discussed many years ago here. Yes, you can change gearbox rotation by flipping the crownwheel but - because it's a pair of hypoid gear cut to run in one direction - it will cause premature teeth wear in the long run.

    Engine swap 845 to GTL1100

I think that in 1983 they unified the bonnets and they put the later style one even on 845cc engined cars, so it won't be necessary to change it. The 845 radiator can be kept - you have to be creative with the hoses - but it's too small for the Cleon engine. If you fit the Cleon radiator, you...

    Steering wheel hub.

Steering shaft length protruding out of steering column tube is indeed longer on post-83 R4s and "phase 2" R5s, the spline diameter, taper and number of teeth being always the same. Maybe this hub is longer at its rear end and would foul the dashboard or steering column covers on earlier models...

    Steering wheel hub.

All Renault splined steering column ends are the same from 1960s to late '90s, so it's very simple finding a suitable steering wheel hub.

Fuel tank drain plug bushing came loose

It's soldered, not brazed. If you have access to a soldering iron (the old style block that you heat over a flame), it's the most safe way to do it.

    First engine rebuild - ever

Note that the connecting rods must be fitted in a particular way, too: the big end bearing caps should be towards the camshaft side of the engine.

May also be both rear brake hoses. It's usual to act as one-way valves when they clog inside.
