Renault 4 accident on the road

No worries Malcolm - I fully intend to keep it one way or another but am having daymares with my insurers Post Office Insurance (brokers) - in no way do I recommend them; I have now cut them out of the loop altogether and am talking to their underwriter (Sabre Insurance), who seem more on the...

Renault 4 accident on the road

In the UK, the insuance cannot always tell me what to do. Since 2017, rules have been in place to list damaged vehicles in different classes according to the extent of the damage; The Association of British Insurers (ABI) Salvage Code goes into more detail on how vehicles are judged and what...

Renault 4 accident on the road

Simon of Renault Reborn has kindly suggested a value of £4000 for my van; he recently sold one for more than that. Am still hoping my insurers will decide it's ok for a garage to do the work. Simon's also after an early 1970's aluminium front grill to buy off someone - anyone have one spare?

Pete, you are so generous ! I may well get back to you after the insurers have viewed :)

Renault 4 accident on the road

Oh wow! It's a small world! Thanks Paul - nice to know some more history of the van. :p

Renault 4 accident on the road

Has anyone a good idea how to find out if the chassis & the suspension mountings on the left side are still in the right place etc? Rear wheels are staggered in the chassis, I know - just to make this a bit harder! Wing and so on seem to have taken most of the forces and the wheel and tyre...

Renault 4 accident on the road

Thanks Tomcat - I had been watching it for weeks before buying it; in the end my partner insisted I took a proper look as she was getting tired of me looking at it online! The garage didn't restore it to the level they suggested before they resprayed it - welding practice has been needed quite...

    Ethanol-mixed petrol

A lot of modern cars have plastic fuel tanks and fuel pipes, plus synthetic rubbers that tolerate ethanol mixes.

Renault 4 accident on the road

Brian (Cornish4) and Bobble, you are angels - I shall let you all know what happens next week with the red tape.:clapping:

Renault 4 accident on the road

Jurjenz, Eoynteenie and Iaxeian, you are fabulous human beings and your thoughtfulness bowls me over! I shall leave actually collecting spares until I know what the insurers want to do and I can start doing something with the van, but your kind offers are wonderful.

Renault 4 accident on the road

Thanks to you all for your kind words. It'll be an economical write-off, and I hope the insurers will let me keep it. I also hope that the chassis/suspension is reusable.. Anyone know where I can get a new left inner wing? I have found new (albeit probably rubbish copies) wings, bonnet...

Renault 4 accident on the road

Thanks Andy; possible neck issue (time will tell) but otherwise not a scratch :) The dashcam of my partner (who was following) reveals that I was slightly irate at the other driver, though I don't remember much of that

Renault 4 accident on the road

Well, I'm not saying it was a good driver who pulled out in front of me. It was a rude fat blond woman with a 2018 disability (automatic?) car who ignored the give way markings and resulted in this. Ouch. Red mist day. Hoping to keep the van for repairs as and when. The bonnet hinges were...

Distributor vacuum advance unit - Ducellier or Magneti Marelli

Hi again Andy - I think that you are correct; I am ordering one of the above, 71293702, also known as 071293702010. I also feel that it was fitted to the Super 5, and the vacuum unit matches a Super 5 for a 1.1 engine like mine. I suspect that at least in some cases, a change in part number...

Distributor vacuum advance unit - Ducellier or Magneti Marelli

Hi mojobaby - many thanks for that link and interesting video! Unfortunatley, https://elecancetres.com doesn't have a vacuum unit like mine - it has a plastic clip that pops onto a ball in the distributor. Picture of what looks similar to mine is below.

Distributor vacuum advance unit - Ducellier or Magneti Marelli

Thanks Andy, unfortunately it looks older than mine and possibly soon to collapse as well! I'm after a brand new vacuum advance unit ideally, and they are probably easy to get - but I have no idea what part number to purchase. Anybody have a part number for me, or a new one to buy?

Distributor vacuum advance unit - Ducellier or Magneti Marelli

I have a 1108cc c1e 688 Cleon engine with a Magneti Marelli R335/D83 distributor (same as Ducellier R335/D83 I think). The vacuum advance unit has a leak and I am looking for a new one, but there are no part numbers on the vacuum advance. Has anyone an idea as to what to buy, suitable for...

    best oil for the job

20w50 for mine since 15w40 started switching the oil pressure warning light on at tickover. 112K miles may point to oil pump or bearings wear to produce lower oil pressure, but it sounds fine still, so carrying on!

what toe in on my 4 s

I use a Gunson G4008 Trakrite Wheel Alignment Gauge, it's a drive-over 'plate'; they are about £50 (ebay etc) but with careful use (dead level and quite smooth surfaces), it pays for itself time and again. Then you can experiment with no cost penalty, and know what the toe-in is set at! Book...
