    Electric Fuel Pump

I fitted one as a backup for the mechanical pump as I was worried about that failing at some really inconvenient time. So I still have the mechanical pump which is probably the original one but I also have the added complexity of fuel line T-junctions and non-return valves. I bought the...

    Car history supplying dealer etc..

There is a post on Facebook tonight on the ’Fascinating Wexford History’ page which states that the Wexford assembly line, operated by Smith’s Engineering stopped in 1984, not 1986.

    Car history supplying dealer etc..

My quintessential French car is Irish? I’ll have to stop ‘putaining’ when it draws blood and start ‘fecking’……..

    Heated Windscreens?

I’m old enough to remember when you could buy diy heated screens - plastic sheets with embedded elements - which self-stuck to the screen. At a time when few cars, certainly in the UK, had them as standard. They were better than nothing - for as long as the adhesive lasted!

    Fuel Leak

I suggest that you try to siphon as much fuel out of the tank as you can before removing the tank as it makes the removal process much easier to manage without spillage.

    Breakdown cover

I have to admit that I’ve never had to experience the RAC service - I‘ve a couple of breakdowns with Land Rovers but fairly local so responses were fine - but I will shop around on my next renewal date.

    Breakdown cover

I’ve got a multi car policy with NFU Mutual. Basic get me home breakdown cover (through the RAC) for my R4 costs £17.71 whereas breakdown cover plus home assist for my LR Discovery Sport costs £29.40.

    145×13 tyres

Yes, just make sure that they are 145/80R13 rather than 145/70R13 (not that you’d notice the impact on the gearing and speedometer with the lower profile).

    Terminal decline?

Thanks for these thoughts - I will do as suggested. I once harboured thoughts of doing a full body off restoration but now I just want it to last as long as my driving licence and to enjoy it.

    Terminal decline?

Just uncovered a little deep rusting here on the outside flange - I’m going to treat it with rust converter to see it through the summer months but was wondering how bad it is when considering the next MOT in December, and what is involved in replacement - any thoughts please?

    which fuel additive?

Unfortunately Esso 99 up here in Scotland does contain the 5% ethanol, perhaps because all of Scotland’s fuels come from one refinery. And if you check the Esso website you’ll find that all of their 99 across the UK will contain ethanol from September.

EPB ecu where can i find this ?

For which type of car? Not a Renault 4!

Its That time of the year -once again....

Same to you, Reid, from Scotland but my R4 will be staying active during the winter months (snow here today). Just got my new MOT, with a few advisories around the front wheel bearings and wishbones, so I plan to resume my travel adventures whenever the weather permits. I’m 71 and can’t afford...

    Roof Rack

I have a pair of gutter-fixing roof bars which graced my Land Rover Discovery 2. They have a large adjustable vertical lift and the cross bars could be easily cut down to match the lesser width of the F4. Happy to part with them for the courier cost. I should be able to find a photo (tried...

    Unusual MOT Failure

Just had my first opportunity to check the door - it works fine. I think that the MOT tester has been trying to open it while locked from the outside. As I said there is ‘give’ in the plunger and, this is what may have caused the confusion, the two lock barrels are 180 degrees apart. So on the...

    Unusual MOT Failure

Thanks for that info, Andrew. I’m not questioning the result of the test, my thought was that maybe the tester had tried to open the door from the out side while locked (the plunger did have some ‘give’ in its locked state) and had caused a breakage in the mechanism. Anyway just need to fix it...

    Unusual MOT Failure

My 4GTL failed it’s MOT today on three issues - fog lamp not working (forgot to check it!), front sidelight not working (always a bit intermittent), and new one to me - front passenger door wouldn’t open, perhaps only from outside. But it was ok the night before. Has anyone had door latch...

Renault 4 1108cc SEV Marchal electronic ignition

I have a Femsa distributor on my GTL and I went for a Gammatronix system, based on a recommendation on this forum, and it delivered an immediate and (so far) a lasting improvement on the car’s power (!) delivery. Very easy to install. Incidentally I have never experienced any difficulty in...

This saved so much time and annoyance!

Coincidentally I used the same type of brush to grease the lower universal joint on my 406’s steering column down the back of the engine rather than from underneath. Much easier!

    Temperature sensor

Here is my installation on my 4GTL - some water pumps have a threaded blank to take a sensor but not mine so I inserted an adaptor into the radiator top hose. The gauge position is not ideal as its visibility is a bit compromised by the steering wheel. All the parts came from eBay.
