I just panicked and put fuel in after seeing the gauge on empty.
The gauge didn't move after filling up!
Then it shot up grrr...
I cannot see how the wire goes from the gauge to the tank, so I can do some tests
to see which end has the problem.
I've crawled around underneath, and had the mats out in the back...

Anyone know where it runs?

It's certainly worth checking the fuses and fusebox connections before doing anything else. If the fuse is okay but the gauge isn't working, try pinching the contacts together.

The wire to the tank goes between the rear floor and the top of the tank. You have to drop the tank to access it. Not a terrible job but best avoided by testing as you propose.

When did the gauge shoot up? During/after starting and getting some battery charge on? Sometimes it shows low with ignition on and then comes up with some charge and a few decent volts in the system.

On mine it runs over the tank then through the rear chassis leg popping out on the LHS rear and going into the light loom.

Above the tank is usually clean and dry but there is sometimes an inline connector at the back of the chassis leg that can get corroded

I found the orange wire in the the 8-way connector- its next to the fuse box under the windscreen on the right.
If I can catch the gauge not working, I can meter that wire to earth and that will tell me where to go,
but as always, when I'm ready with the meter the bloody gauge is working!!!
