Anyone seen this? R4 recreaction in Japan!!!

Mmmmm, well anything Japanese is normally extremely reliable, as for Saab, they were in there time one of the greatest cars, really well built and a superb drive. I'd still have a Saab now, unfortunately another good car company consumed by major manufacturers and forgotten about :dontknow:

Maybe they’ve been around a while Paul, but I’ve never seen one before, they are not imported here to my knowledge and certainly not advertised well, even if they are!
Sorry if it came across as critical it was a friendly observation as quite often due to people replying too old posts on here they suddenly become active again I'm pretty sure that I've actually got the 4l magazine with the two cars as compared if I find it I will will try and post some of the pics on here for you

The R4 Magazine was a french publication only, wasn't it Paul? I've never seen an English copy anyway?!

Yes but I can look at the pictures and pretend I can still understand French I have been getting quite good recently as I am on several French Facebook groups and although they help fully provide a translation I try and see if I can can read the original

Good way of learning French, nice!
I might try that myself, I really need to know more of the language, bit lazy with it really :-(

Movies are a good way to pick up languages, having problems finding the original ‘ Italian Job’ with english subtitles and spanish language though.

Saab 95 V4..best car I've ever owned..& hate to say it (don't tell her in the barn) but the most loved too!
Had the same engine in a Transit, Saab did a lot more with the Ford V4, even beating the works Escorts mk1 rally cars with it until they put a twin cam BDA into the Escort, Saab even developed a turbo version of the V4 putting out @210 bhp, my Ford had 46....

Now remember that Saab used the german cologne v4 engine, not the uk V4 essex engine. 18092011711.JPG

My dad's own saab 95 V4 behind my R4, (this is a very old picture, RIP Annoyed Polo the Guinea Pig :( )

And know of a turbo'd Saab 95 V4 as well.

My Dad had a Mk1 Transit V4 new! I loved it, but was too young to drive it at the time....... I still did though, could drive by the time I was 11

Well, I've learnt something new today, in my head Cologne was V4 and Essex V6, so there you go, nice one, good info! :)

Both engines both, visually easiest way to identify ( when train-spotting at shows etc.)is the position of distributor, colonge engines at rear of engine block behind carb, essex front of block in plain view.

Hello all,

Fascinating subject, lots of interesting comments.

Unfortunately I think all the retro-designs are a dead end. All the iconic originals noted (2CV, R4, Fiat 500, Mini) offered cutting-edge new packaging and design economy when launched. Retro-designs never live up to this (although I do like some of them!).

I love small cars for their economy; and the best current designs also offer, to some extent, cutting-edge new packaging and design economy (except in styling which is currently Mannerist).

Future iconic status is hard to judge. However my hope is pinned on the next ground-up designed city EV for this - not sure which if any of the current candidates will achieve this though! Watch that space...

Best wishes, Simon.

Oops, sorry was responding to posts pre Sept 19, see now things have moved on since...
