Brake Parts help

I would be grateful for any help - my local garage has advised that the rear brake assembly needs total replacement but has asked me to order the relevant parts. The car is a 1984 GTL but looking for the parts online has just resulted in utter confusion as my technical skills are zero. I am scared of ordering the wrong parts and there seem to be different systems.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Many thanks in advance.

Hi James
First of all, don't worry - the parts are easily available.
Perhaps you already know this, but you need to establish whether your braking system is Bendix (sometimes called DBA/Bendix), or Girling (sometimes called Lucas/Girling).
These pages may help:

Bendix or Girling?

Identifying the system by looking at the front calipers:

Neither method is foolproof, though - the only sure way is for the garage to remove one of the rear drums and take a picture of the assembly if they aren't sure. This wouldn't take long - no more than half an hour.

Once you've found out which system you've got, make sure you get a pre-assembled brake kit (rather than just the shoes) - this includes 2 cylinders and shoe kits for both sides (they include everything you need - springs, fitting parts, etc. ), and you'll save yourself a lot of money in labour costs this way - at least the cost of the brake set.

If you have a Bendix system, you can get a pre-assembled kit here:

https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/brake-kit-drum-brakes/renault-4-112-1-1-34hp_v1971_g3859.html

They're a really good, reliable company and deliver quickly.
I've used the Ferodo FMK054 kits on my cars, and they save you/your garage a lot of time!

Anyway, hope this helps - I'm sure your car will soon be back on the road!

If you have a Girling system, I'm sure someone on here will help - I don't have any experience of that system.

Hi James

I have new old stock brake shoes, wheel cylinders and brake fitting kits spare. I would need to know if you have a Bendix or Girling system as Andy suggests above. A picture of the rear brake set up having removed the brake drum will suffice and I will be able to work out which set up you have. If interested please email me at: christianebeyer@yahoo.co.uk

Andy thanks very much for this - really very helpful. I haven't a clue but will get the garage to confirm which system I have!
