Many many years ago - have been a driver/rider for a very long time - I stayed with my vehicle's insurance companies for years at a time. It was simple and straightforward as I just needed to pay the renewal reminder every twelve months. But then people suggested it was wise to shop around for better quotes. So I did.

I have owned five Citroen 2CVs, in fact we got married with one 44yrs ago, and drove her back to my Army base in West Germany with all of our possessions. Anyway my present 2CV I've owned for six years, and felt it was time for a change, a Renault 4GTL change at that. Tomorrow I catch the train down to the South Coast to collect my 'found' R4.

Today I contacted my insurance company, well the one which covers my 2CV, to ask them to add the R4 to it. I wanted to keep the 2CV for a few weeks until I have found a buyer for her. "Oh no, we can't do that. We must close one cover, then open up another insurance for the Renault" he said. Now Lancaster Insurance (oops, it slipped out) had always been cheap and reasonable, and quoted me £129.95 fully comp ("Oh no Sir, we don't do 'fully comp' as that would cover an Act of God which we don't do"). OK, I said, I will contact Peter James Insurance who covers our BMW118d and two motorbikes. "Oh I am going off in twenty minutes and need to conclude the deal before then" he said. No it's only fair I contact them as they've been good and I need cover before catching the train to the South Coast first thing in the morning, I responded. "Well that's no good, that won't give me any chance to manoeuvre. I'll ring you at 8.30 tomorrow". Are you saying if I get a better quote, you can improve on it, because if you are, I don't want anything to do with it. I've asked you for your best quote and am not going to be mucked around in this way.

At last I was able to cut short this abrasive conversation, to be put through to Customer Services. "Cancel your 2CV cover? Right you paid £184.37 in December 2015 so have had six months cover, then we take off the admin fees, then various other add-ons, which means you actually owe us money, but as a show of good will we'll waive that. So that's quits. Now I must read you a boringly long .............." I put the phone down.

Peter James Insurance couldn't quite match their price but neither did they ask me 101 questions, nor try to bully me. There, I feel better now.......... ;-)

Last year I compared about 10 different companies who offered agrred value classic car insurance. For my cover needs (4 classic cars, incl commercial vehicle and lhd, business use for my business and my wife's, breakdown cover including in Europe, etc), Peter James came top with level of cover & were equal cheapest. I also found them to be quick to answer the phone and they understood what I waneed and dealt with me in a friendly and efficient way. My previous insurer (Footman James) did nearly as well with level of cover and premium but were poor with customer service and appeared to be employing sales-people to answer their phones rather than insurance experts.

Many of my classic motorcyclist colleagues have moved to Peter James too so I now have two bikes, one modern car and one classic car covered by them. The BMW118d was £100 cheaper than our usual insurer plus recovery in UK and abroad. Brilliant.

I was with directline they would only insure for 3rd party, said it would go down when it was over 30 years old. phoned Heritage and i now have fully com. for £120 and valued to £2000. Directline wanted £220 for just 3rd party .dick turpin spings to mind.glad i phoned heritage ,helpfull and all done in a few mins.

no , and like i say very good service , chap at work told me about them , he has 2 moggies with them. a saving of 100 pounds. Result!

Um, can I just add something of interest here?
I have a multi-vehicle policy through Footman-James (AXA classic policy) and as long as I have one 'everyday vehicle' on the policy and a minimum of 3 cars insured, every vehicle, excluding my main use one, is just £30 to add on for the year! Exceptionally good service and I've found they look after me very well:-)
So I've just added, yet another R4 on the policy and yep, £30 for the year.
Even a great big 4.2 litre Toyota Land cruiser was only £40 for the year, at these prices I can add on what ever I want. Worth investigating, before you ask, NO, I don't work for them!

I was with Footman James for many years on a multiple classic car policy for my various 'A' series Citroens, but the policy kept creeping up - I was then put on to Peter James and have been with them ever since (they even cover my 1993 AX....!). I've found them extremely competitive and are very understanding when I find something else to add r take off the policy. I mentioned that I was an ex-Footman James customer and this seemed to go down extremely well as I understand that Peter James broke away from them some time ago

Thoroughly recommended.....

Grumm, Peter James Insurance now cover our BMW118d, the R4GTL and two motorcycles. They are just such pleasant people to do business with.

I agree. FJ were just 2cv specific, whereas PJ are happy to do anything as long as it's over 20 years old. They were also faultless on agreed values.....

Same with Footman-James, (see my earlier thread) And just £30 per car/per year, my policy went down this year!!
