carburettor problem? (engine not starting)

hello,

I tried to start my R4 this morning, but the engine did not start. After opening the carburettor from above you can see a hole. I *think* I remember that you could actually see the fuel coming in from there when someone else tried to start the engine but I am not sure.

I have not been able to see anything this time (while someone else tried to start the engine). So does this mean that the fuel does not reach the carburettor? Or is it normal that you can not see it?

I then pulled out the hose from the outgoing side of the fuel filter (the engine not running of course) and quite some fuel was propelled out of it as if it had been under pressure. Is that normal? I then tried to start the engine and saw fuel come through the filter, so that at least is working.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Gogi! try cleaning out the mesh-filter that sits on the carb (where the fuel-line goes into the carb) It has been covered on here before -R.

I have removed the hose directly from the carb (recently having tried to start the car a gush of fuel came running out of the hose as I pulled it away - is this normal?), and there is some kind of screw that can be removed with a kind of metal net on it. Is that the filter you mean? It does not look dirty.

Yes this is the inlet with the filter you can see-Screw out the screw and take out the filter blow it clean and if lucky you might be on your way..
Seeing as petrol gushes you have supply to the carb.. -R.

It is normal for fuel to be pressurised in the pipe to the carburettor. I've been splashed myself. It means your fuel pump is working well.

I didn't understand your question. When the car doesn't start it is more usually a distributor problem. A good service will normally resolve ignition problems.

You were right is was not the carb. The breaker inside the distributor has stopped opening and closing. Unfortunately I cannot open the distributor because one of the two screws has rusted badly. I will try again later. I remember some king of spring being in there. Could it be broken oder jumped out?
The breaker just always stays in "open" position and does not move a millimetre

Now Malolm Finally(!) woken up from underneath the Gorde-project you are in good hands GoGi .Hope you get it going again soon.................-R.

I put some gasoline into the throttle through the inlet and does not respond.. assuming the distributor/spark plugs/bobbin is ok, should it start despite the problem with the carburettor??

Is that assumption correct....? I'd investigate the electrical side of things first! Is there a spark at the plug? Remove a plug, reconnect the H.T. lead to it & place it on the top of the engine, where it can earth out through the block. Now operate the starter & you should see a series of blue flashes or sparks jumping across the plug. Investigate and report back!

believe it or not, carburetor failing! There was nothing to indicate that it was time to clean the carb. But I was driving on reserve and probably carb draws residue from the bottom of the tank.
Trust me i have experience with R4 and I was convinced that he would always start if you put fuel in the throttle..
It just wouldn't start.. like electricals issues..
p.s. detach, cleaned..

If you pour too much petrol through the carburettor the engine may flood and will not fire.
Same thing when you have a weak battery from continuous cranking.

I have never ever believed the 'low level so pump picks up crap from bottom of tank' stuff....it makes no sense.

Angel is right...petrol is an insulator, so no spark- if you think it's had too much fuel, press throttle _slowly_ to floor and crank engine,
and the air will clear the fumes.

you know what was in the carburetor/float bowl, you saw it?
you were with me so you claim?

Err...no, just adding knowledge to Angel's comment.
It is, of course, what could have been happening.
So was the float bowl full or empty?
