Early Renault 4 serial number assistance?

Hi, Mike in Canada here (British Columbia to be exact). I've never owned an 4, mostly because they're so rare here. However I like them very much and have had a long interest in them. I have owned two Renault 5s.

Anyway, the reason for this post is that I managed to get a download from the British Columbian vehicle registration authority of all Renaults that were registered in this Canadian Province, from those older models that were still in existence around 1978 through the present day. All I got was the VIN/serial number (also known as the diamond plate number on Renaults) and the body colour, not model names. Renault sold cars in Canada between about 1958 and 1987, and the R4 was one of the models they sold. In total, Renault sold 2538 Renault 4 sedans and 490 Renault 4 fourgonnettes here between 1962 and 1971.

Canadian market R4s had a few differences from the European and British market ones of the same era: laminated windscreen, seat belt mounts from 1963 onward (front and rear from 1968) and three point belts from 1969, all red taillights and most visibly, 7 inch diameter headlights instead of the small versions on every other R4 worldwide.

In the serial number data that I got from the Province of BC, there were at least 46 Renault 4s among the nearly 12,000 Renaults listed, but the identified R4s are all sedans. Their serial numbers range from 3590663 (1963) through 4801632 (1971). One of these is an original unrestored 1968 R4 Sinpar Plein Air, which I expect to see in person in the coming weeks and I will post photos of it here. It has 13,000 miles and has never been repainted.

I definitely recall at the end of the 1970s seeing the occasional R4 Fourgonnette around Vancouver and so amongst the serial numbers provided from British Columbia, there surely are some Fourgonnettes in the list, maybe at least a couple. This version of the R4 was sold in Canada between 1963 and 1971.

My question is: what are typical serial number ranges for the R4 Fourgonnette for model years 1963-1971?

Thank you!

Hello!

Funny to hear when someone is interested in this small car at North America.
More interesting is that some of them are lived for so long.
Thus plen air is in factory state. Is it driven at all? Occasionally?

I am interested in that bigger headlight. Can you post picture of it?

About your question.
I have found production number sequences thru years of production. See pictures below
But what connection that production number have with VIN number i can not tell.
I would say that they are also lined up in sequences but not sure.

And here is model/year cross section taken from great web page https://www.la4ldesylvie.fr/ where you can find out (and learn) many things about R4

Production number is written on separate oval plate.
Here is picture from my car. Production number is circled.
My car i snot listed on that production number sequences i have put as it is made in 1992.
Diamond and oval plate are actually one plate but on early models there were two plates.

Hope it helped little bit

Cheers

Thank you, that seems as though it would help quite a lot. To be clear, are the numbers on the sheets from the parts manual the oval (body) number or the diamond (serial) number? The cars are registered in British Columbia by their serial numbers (diamond plate).

I will post photos of the front end of Canadian models when I get home later this evening, and after I visit the Plein Air in person later this year.

Interesting! A lot of R4s sold in a market like Canada, where most buyers were familiar with American cars of that era.

The owner of this Plein Air was kind enough to provide me with measurements of the side panels, as well as the decals, that helped me a lot to build a replica, fifteen years ago.

Any help with the Fourgonnette serial (diamond plate) numbers would be great. I think the charts posted above are oval plate numbers,

Hi again!
Numbers in pictures i have put are from oval plate - production numbers - red circled number on my plate.

Serijal number - chassis number or VIN number is located on diamond plate - Green circled number on my plate.

My car has diamond and oval plate stamped together.

Here is same picture again.

If serial number is written in sequences then my car would be 8949503th car in the row.

Thank you for posting pictures of those bigger headlights

My pleasure.

What I am really asking is what are the serial number (not production number) ranges for R4 Fourgonnettes between 1963 and 1971. The reason I am asking is I got a huge download of serial numbers from where I live but I need to decode them and knowing the ranges for the model years and models would be very helpful.

I have about 45 "Canadian model R4" cars in the database identified already, but these are all the 5 door hatchback - apart from the one Plein-Air - and I need to know what the Fourgonnette numbers should be from '63-'71.

Unfortunately serial numbers were used for registration purposes only. They are not officially recorded and arranged by model year like oval plate numbers. I'll agree with Petak, the serial number sequence may had been broken randomly or restarted. You can however be fairly sure that if you find a serial number from a car of a particular type (say an R2106) of known build date, you can assign close serial numbers to it as being of close build dates, too.
If your database includes the first five digits of the serial number, any number beginning with R210 indicates that the car is a Fourgonette.

Thanks.

Sadly, the British Columbia registration process was a bit random - sometimes (maybe one in ten or twenty) the car is registered as (say) "R11233590663" but most times it is just 3590683. You are correct that the context is helpful but there are no R210x numbers listed so I really don't know where to begin or what to look for in the last 7 digits. Even having one example from the years 1963-1970 would be very helpful.

If there is no R210x number or any other "model number (Le" hidden in VIN number i am afraid you would not get much far. As you can not connect model and serial (VIN) number

If you can find out which model of R4 is registered (just for example 1123 or 1128 or 2106 ) you might be able to list models from older to newer according to serial number.

Here is one link. Topic in this forum where you can find out more about whole VIN number and how to decode it.

Let me ask it this way: does anyone in this forum have a 1963-1970 R4 Fourgonnette? If so, having the serial number and (if known) model year would be all I need.

Do not have such car!

Can you show us some or one of that numbers you have

Maybe someone here can help that way

All of these show up as "RENAULT R4" in the database:

All of this with R1123 are limousine model.
You should look up for R2102 or R2104 or R2104 and R2106.
These numbers refere to furgonette model.

That is if they have made differance between models when writing numbers in database.

We have a 1962 Fourgounette in our workshop. I’ll take a picture of the oval plate for you tomorrow.
