Hi, Mike in Canada here (British Columbia to be exact). I've never owned an 4, mostly because they're so rare here. However I like them very much and have had a long interest in them. I have owned two Renault 5s.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that I managed to get a download from the British Columbian vehicle registration authority of all Renaults that were registered in this Canadian Province, from those older models that were still in existence around 1978 through the present day. All I got was the VIN/serial number (also known as the diamond plate number on Renaults) and the body colour, not model names. Renault sold cars in Canada between about 1958 and 1987, and the R4 was one of the models they sold. In total, Renault sold 2538 Renault 4 sedans and 490 Renault 4 fourgonnettes here between 1962 and 1971.
Canadian market R4s had a few differences from the European and British market ones of the same era: laminated windscreen, seat belt mounts from 1963 onward (front and rear from 1968) and three point belts from 1969, all red taillights and most visibly, 7 inch diameter headlights instead of the small versions on every other R4 worldwide.
In the serial number data that I got from the Province of BC, there were at least 46 Renault 4s among the nearly 12,000 Renaults listed, but the identified R4s are all sedans. Their serial numbers range from 3590663 (1963) through 4801632 (1971). One of these is an original unrestored 1968 R4 Sinpar Plein Air, which I expect to see in person in the coming weeks and I will post photos of it here. It has 13,000 miles and has never been repainted.
I definitely recall at the end of the 1970s seeing the occasional R4 Fourgonnette around Vancouver and so amongst the serial numbers provided from British Columbia, there surely are some Fourgonnettes in the list, maybe at least a couple. This version of the R4 was sold in Canada between 1963 and 1971.
My question is: what are typical serial number ranges for the R4 Fourgonnette for model years 1963-1971?
Thank you!
