Engine clatter

The higher pitched noise sounds like a tappety one to me, so I should check the head gasket bolt tightness settings and then the tappet settings. The lower pitched one had a "bom bom (pause) bom bom" sound, which suggests something's loose somewhere. Have another go with the stethoscope & see if you can narrow down from where the noise emanates.

The sound is clearer this time round. Do you think it could be coming from the bottom end of the engine (shell bearings)?
 
Have read threads on forum before where the clutch operating bar, from cable into bellhousing/thrust bearing can sieze/stick to the bellhousing, especially after periods of standing, seem to recall its a clean and careful use of WD40 to free/unstick, probe on operating bar might be worth a go

I think it's not coming from the engine itself. The low thumping which jou can better hear at the beginning of the last video, does not sound "in rhythm" of crankshaft or valves to me.
I suspect a bearing of the belt tensioner or maybe dynamo pulley. Or worse from inside of the gearbox.
The whole engine bay can be a soundbox with weird acoustics and it's always hard to tell where the noise is coming from.
 
I agree, it doesn’t seem to follow the rhythm of the engine…it also seems to reduce as the engine warms up. I think I am just going to live with it for now.
 
I am beginning to think the fan belt that runs on the crankshaft/water pump is perhaps the wrong one, and it is that that is causing the clatter. I slipped it off and started up and don't think I had the noise, but I was so nervous of running with no belt I only kept it going for a few seconds. I replaced it and watched the belt as it was running and ( perhaps I am imagining things) it seemed to flutter in time to my clatter. If I try to increase the tension, the belt comes right up to the dynamo cooling fan blades and an audible rubbing occurs....so I'm going to try to replace both belts. It looks like new alternator belts are easily available ( but will it fit my 6v dynamo?), but I can't seem to find the larger one. Does anyone know what the actual lengths should be. 1962 R1124 800-01

The alternator belts will be the wrong length - the dynamo belt is 600/610 mm (7700586110).
The other belt is 670mm (7701348137)
My TL has the same engine as yours, so I imagine the belts will be the same (the French RTA and websites say so).
I have a NOS Kléber dynamo belt -let me know if you're interested!
Just out of interest, what belt tensioning system does your car have?

Thank you very much for the photo/info, yours does look very similar to mine, except the boss between the fan blades and first pulley seems more substantial. The tensioner is another small pulley on a swinging arm. I'll do some googling this evening and see what belts I can find from your measurements. I may take you up on your offer but wouldn't like to deplete your spares unnecessarily.

If you think the noise goes when the belt is disconnected, then this and reminds me of an issue I had recently after I had my rad refurbed and new water pump and the fan was catching intermittently on the cowl. Hence with the pump belt off might also be worth turning the fan to see if one of the blades is contacting the radiator cowl, mine was fouling the bottom of the cowl and was difficult to see when I had reassembled, but made a noise that got better when hot and at higher engine speeds. Just a thought if it helps.
 
Worth a look, thanks. I have now ordered what I hope are the correct new belts. Probably won’t get round to fitting them till next weekend, but will certainly be sure to check the fan clearances then
 
The ventoux engines do tend to clatter at very low rpm, I would suggest checking your idling speed. If it is below 650 rpm I would bring it up to at least that. I think any rattling below normal idle speed doesn't count!
The sump tends to act like a bell (if you knock it with something you'll see what I mean).
How old is your engine? If it's an early 3 speed car it might have timing gears rather than a chain, they tended to be noisier (even on new cars) but all the cars have a bit of a timing chain clatter. I find also you can get noises through the gearshift, and depending where it is exactly or being held or not held when in neutral will potentially effect noise.
Another one going back to the dynamo belts etc, when you have the belt off it might be worth also slackening off the lower belt and checking to see how the idler pulley on the right hand side of the engine is rolling- is it tight, or rattly, etc. The ball races in that can be replaced if it is.
 
I looked up timing chains/gears. The book shows gears uo to 800-01 serial no 207836, then double row chain from then up to 295688, then single row chain after then. So you definitely have a timing chain rather than gears. Like I said, I have a car with the chain and they still rattle at very low rpm.
 
Piet, this is an early engine (five digit serial number), so it has timing gears. Your comment on this is right; the middle (fibre) timing gear will wear after some time, and camshaft drive will become sloppy, this may lead to noise at the front of the engine because engine ancillaries are being driven from the front of the camshaft. John, try grabbing the fan and rocking it back and forth; there should be no noticeable play or noise.
 
Angel, you are dead right! Don't know how I missed the difference of a digit. Been a long week....
 
I think the belt fitted is too long as the tensioner shouldn't come up past horizontal and would normally sit at approx 45 degrees and tensioned upwards as belt needs adjusting
