Gentlemen. We have an '88 Spanish R4 GTL, with only 40k miles on the clock. Bodily, no rust, and interior very good. We bought it sometime ago with a couple of problems that defeated the previous owner. It had a front bump and needs a bit of bodywork refettleing. There was a problem with a failed head gasket which we have dealt with. The car runs pretty well, but is a bit lumpy. It starts well, but to run it appears to like a little choke, sometimes when you stop, or slow down, and the engine returns to idle , the engine will cut out. We have driven it a bit, hoping that use would make it run better, but it has not. I am in Lichfield, Staffordshire, a bit north of Brum and would like to know if anyone can recommend an R4 specialist who can have a look at the ignition/carburettor set up for me.Thank you.

Edwin, it sounds like the carburettor might be drawing air into the system making the fuel/air mixture very weak. Obviously there is no wear in the carb spindle which can sometimes cause this, as the engine and carb have such low mileage. So, it may be drawing air through the gasket between the carb and inlet manifold. Try tightening the two nuts, with a 13mm spanner. Also it could be a split hose on the emissions side of things.

Thanks Cornish, will try that. The carb may have come off when the head gasket was done and they may have not been fully tightened.
Will keep you informed.

Hi Edwin, yes keep us up to speed. Nuts and bolts can work loose, especially where a gasket is involved, so they may have been tightened when the work was done but have settled a bit since then. It might be an idea to get your garage to re-tighten the cylinder head bolts and check the valve clearances now you've used It a bit, if they havn't already done so.
Regards Brian.
