Hello everyone. Am new to this forum, but was hoping someone might be able to provide me with some advice. I am looking to buy a RHD R4 for a landmark b'day for a family member, and wondered if anyone had any recommendations on UK specialists who might be able to help in terms of carrying out works (both mechanical and cosmetic) to get a car into a decent condition? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Sam

You could try Paul Cunningham (Worthing):

or Derek Flavell (Renospeed, now in Cornwall: 07816 586642)

They're both R4 experts.
Good luck in the hunt!

Sam - I have a RHD F4 which I had restored. Happy to talk you through my experience.

There's Renault Reborn too in Lincolnshire.

The costs of having someone else restore a car will always be far higher than the cost of buying one already in the desired condition. My favourites are original cars from rust free climates which are going to be left hand drive. That's fine on UK roads. Only reason you want RHD is if you want to overtake something and that doesn't happen in a R4.

Don't underestimate the expense that will come with buying a cheaper and seemingly more 'solid' LHD car, lots of them have been cobbled together and kept running on shoestrings in France as they were a working vehicle before speculators saw the money. Once one thing goes, it often highlights lots of other issues with the vehicle and to fix all the issues is expensive. Also 'patina' is often a buzzword for soon to be serious rust...

They are as rare as dodo teeth but RHD vehicles are better, they're nicer to drive and easier to use in the UK - post GTL RHD models have better driving positions etc than LHD vehicles.
I would also avoid any vans with front drum brakes for repair and ergonomic reasons - mid 80's disc braked, 1108cc models are the best to go for, from a cost, performance and enjoyement aspect..

I have driven RHD and LHD in france and here. I think LHD works well, your right hand does the complex thing of operating the gear stick. Overtaking in an R4 is an unrealistic ambition. So anything to do with that is not worth worrying about because its not going to happen. For me LHD is not a problem, except for walking to the wrong side of the car in the morning.
As somebody said above, getting one from a hot clime where they dont use salt is a good option. Then you can cosmetically improve it, but the core structure is sound. Thats what i have done for both my cars. Portugal seems to have lots, as does Spain, France and Italy. Leboncoin in France is good place to find them. Importing them is not difficult and there are folk about who know everything about making a successful importation. Just make sure you get the Registration/Carte Gris in the documents when you buy the car, in useable condition and preferably a pre 1983 for road tax reasons here. I have an 850 car with drum brakes, and I love it. It will drive all day at 65. I have driven it back here and back again to France with no problems except coping with all the fun.

Hi there. I have managed to source a RHD 1985 car which I am taking delivery of today! I have tried Derek Flavell but he is not working any more. I have tried Simon at Renault Reborn but he is also winding down, and I have left messages with Paul Cunningham but without success!! Does anyone have any other recommendations for someone I can take the car to get serviced/assessed etc? Thank you again for any advice. Sam

Sam, whereabouts in London are you? Depending on your location I may be able either to recommend a garage or offer assistance myself.

Thank you. I am south west London but car is currently in Sevenoaks in Kent with my parents. I would be more than happy to travel if helpful. Sam

Seeing Paul Cunningham tonight for our monthly curry meet I will ask him to contact you he is still saving R4s and always very helpful. Regards Simon
