Help!

We have developed two issues with our 1989 TL, any help or advice appreciated!
First we have developed a high pitched squeak, mostly in first and second gear, it is a constant purr almost like a whistle, it disappears in 3rd and 4th.
Secondly after a reasonably short journey the drivers side wing is boiling hot. (Ours is left hand drive)
Like boiling hot, fry and egg on it hot.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Dean

The squeak/whistle could be a number of things. A number of things can be ruled out if it only happens when the car is moving or when stationary with engine running. If it is happening on the move. The first thing I would check are the bottom ball joints. If they become dry/lose their grease due to a split rubber, they can squeak. It could also be the shock absorber bushes or the front wheels bearings. All would need checking to rule out. With regards to the reason for your 'hot' wing. Peer under the wing and you will probably discover your exhaust silencer lives there.

Best Regards

I agree with jcarruthers2, except that usually the silencer on the last cars isn't under the wing.
But the heat is still quite normal, because the exhaust manifold passes there.

Thank you both, the squeak is on the move in first and second gear, it sounds more like a belt or a cog, but it does not do it all the time.

Hi Dean

Therefore, if you think it is a belt type noise. Have you checked whether the fan belts are slack and need adjusting? You sometimes also get a squeal when you accelerate when the belts are slack.

Best Regards
