the broken key part is stuck and I need to remove the lock. How is that done? can anyone help please. it is a Renault 6 from 1072

Hi Pete

The normal procedure would be to disconnect the battery, then disconnect the wiring at the back of the switch. Then turn the key to the 'G' for 'Garage' position, remove the retaining screw located at the top of the metal outer casing, there might also be a small metal button which protrudes out of the top of the casing which you would need to press down. It would then be a case of wiggling the ignition switch free from the casing.

As your key is broken, you cannot follow this procedure unless there is a piece of broken key protruding out of the switch which you could grab hold of with some long nose pliers and turn to the 'G'. Alternatively, if you are able to fish out the piece of key and you have a spare key or can get a locksmith to cut a new key using the pieces of broken key as a template, you would not need to take the switch out at all.

Unfortunately, you may need to drill into the center of the switch to break the internals to free it up. It would then be a case of replacing the switch with a new one.

Unless, someone else on the forum has a suggestion as to how to fish out the broken piece of key if it is totally embedded within the switch.
