Apologies for so blatantly trying to get free info out of you guys but I'm looking for some help on pricing.

I walk past this van every day on the way to work and recently got chatting to the owner. I love this car and would love to own it. Now the owner is saying: "make me an offer!"

Trouble is I don't know what would be a sensible price. I've looked at the price guide but I'm still not sure. It has recently gone through an MOT, which would suggest there are no big problems with rear suspension etc.

Or does it?

Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It looks very smart in the photos. If its the same condition all round it looks a good vehicle. Although don't vans in general have a tough life? Find out what it used to do for a living? If it used to work for a brickie it is probably had a tougher life than if it worked for a baker!

Take it for a spin and have a good look around. A van which doesn't look as good condition as this and a later model van went for £400 without an MOT recently on ebay. Only judging on the picture I would not be surprised to see this van go for around a grand on ebay. I can't recall seeing many earlier looking vans either.
 
It looks tidy but you can't put a true value on it till you've seen underneath with an inspection light and a poking device.

My 1992 R4 had six months mot when I brought it, but underneath all the double skinned areas where the rear suspension bolts on were really bubbled. You could poke a lolly stick through these areas. Conscquently I had to remove the suspension and cut these areas out and weld in new bits using a jig. Malcom's highly useful restoration section shows all the bits where the problem areas can be( http://www.renault4.co.uk/renault-4-chassis-welding.htm ).

If the chassis needs work like mine did the value will be much, much lower. I recon, making a welding jig, welding the rear chassis area (inner suspension mountings), and welding three small plates on the floor pan took me 60 hours+. I'm a fairly novice mechanic so I expect a professional garage could do it in at least half that, but with such a high labour charge it would cost mega bucks.

I'd agree with Beige Belgian regarding it's price on eBay. If it has a solid chassis and drives well I certianly wouldn't be supprised if it went for 1k+.
The last R4 I watched on ebay went for £421, it had 4 months MOT and needed tidying.
Car prices are fickle things. There's often a big differrence between what a car is actually worth and what someone will pay for it! :smile:

Great looking van!
Values are a double edge sword, its nice that 4's remain very affordable, buts thats also why there are so few specialists and some parts can be hard to find.
Low values hamper the establishment of a true market place, particularly for older collectors models.
Compare that to 2cv's and vans, which have a much more solid support, which I think is much better and benefits everybody in the long run.
Lets assume the van is solid...
A 2cv in such condition would be 4 grand 'ish over here, but I would value the 4 at £1500,maybe 2 grand on a very good day.
I always hate it when owners go for the " make me an offer" ploy, I tend to go in low low low and duck! The owner usually comes back with the price they had in mind all the time...

F4 Van

Make him an offer. Its probably one of the last rt hand drive F4 vans in existence, and it looks in exceptional condition for its age. It can only go up in value with time, if its looked after. Ask for a test drive, and you'll be totally hooked. Its such a useful vehicle. I've owned several F4's in the past, and at present I run an F6 in Spain, but I prefer the F4 for looks and agility. I wished I'd seen it. If you don't want it....

Of course the question the original way round is fine.

How much would you be prepared to pay for a vehicle like that?

£2000 doesn't go a long way to buying a piece of modern mass market automobile technology, or a lovely F4 van.

I'd get it checked properly chassis wise and if its all good underneath then go for it!
 
That seems like a very good example of an F4. I'm surprised it's not worth more than 1000.
It's very rare, especially in that condition
 
Update.... The owners of this F4 called me up and informed me that they will shortly be moving and what with owning a few other rare classics, they regretably have to let the
F4 go andasked if i eould like it back.

I have been down and driven it back to Cambridge, serviced it and re-newed the points, plugs, leads, condensor, cap etc. It goes super well but has some rust coming through on the back door now.

Bad news is as i have just bought a much older fourgonnette and i cannot keep this (i dont have room) so i am letting this and my very clean F6 go. So if you are still interested, let me know.
