I'm insuring my R4 1989, 1.1, LHD for the first time (since importing/registering).
Does anyone have suggestions as to a good insurer?
Should it be classic or standard insurance?
Does £250 seem a lot?

Depends on your plan for it. Is teh car a daily or a 2nd car?

If a daily, standard insurance is techinally more ideal.
if a 2nd car, classic is more suitable

£250 seems fair but I am going to have to pay £900 for a modified VW Bora,
I was quoted £650 for a lhd 1988 950cc R4 on classic insurance where my '85 1.1 RND R4 was only £100

...... "Since importing/registering".....
Suggests that you once had v.i.n. insurance certificate/covernote to satisfy our friends at the dvla.
Are they no longer competitive?

Following the link above reflects actual quotes, nearly all good.
Adrian Flux mirrored my max N.C.D for second vehicle without conditions.
It goes without saying, a bad driving record coupled with negative insurance history, is risky business in their eyes.
That, above all else, is when customers get "clobbered"
