Incidently, we had a small accident between 2 modern vehicles which will amount to expensive repairs. I pulled into a parking space, at around 5:00 A.M. at a motorway reststop in Italy. I was in no shape to be driving and wanted to get some sleep. This new Toyota was parked taking up 2 spaces and I attempted fitting our Mondeo wagon in between both vehicles. I ended up scratching the Toyota's plastic toy bumper.
Unfortunately, the person sleeping in the Toyota wasn't French and wasn't Italian (those 2 types don't usually make an issue over minor damage). So, he came out and had a provoking countenace and decided to make it an issue, even though he was partly at fault for taking more space than allowed. My wife didn't think through the situation and told him that she had a cell phone for calling the police. As I returned with my small son from the WC, I found out that she told him this. He wanted to claim damage. So, he should have called the Italian police and try speaking German with them and not us.
Well, what I wanted to say is the following: Notice how the R4s were equipped for such mishaps. The plastic side guards and steel bumpers would have allowed for sloppy parking, without auto manufacturers making lots of money on toy parts such as modern bumpers (perhaps, that's one of the reasons Renault decided to follow suit, by manufacturing their new vehicles according to fashion). This is one reason I wish to drive an old Renault again. Not only because if the vehicle stops, I can repair it on the spot.
This reminds me of when my wife had a similar accident with a BMW. She scratched the toy bumper and the repair ended up costing over 800€. The insurance premium naturally was raised, also
