Novice tyre question

My 1992 1 litre Tl may be treated to new tyres if I can work out what the numbers mean and what tyres will fit.

Currently I have 4 scrappy "135/80 R13 70T"s on standard rims.

I have heard you can safely fit 145/80 on GTLs. Can I fit these to Tl rims and would this offer a slightly higher top speed?

You can fit 145/80. I think the options in the handbook are 135 and 145, I think both at 85 profile.

On my GTL the speedo is completely accurate on 145/85 and overreads by about 5% on the 135/85.

145/80 is a nice choice. Slightly slower acceleration but slightly higher geared. Top speed is about the same, and handling might be slightly less sharp. Personal preference - I vary between the two sizes depending on mood.

Penzance? Thats "down west" to me, I'm in the wadebridge area. Nice to know there's more than one Renault 4 in Kernow.
I'm always after spares. Let me know if you have anything for sale. In particular I want to upgrade my 956cc e.g any mk1 renault 5 engines or carbs.
I have a few spares e.g rear light lens and a front ball joint.
