Got oil leak from 2 different places (1) underneath the intercooler (2) from somewhere else for about 2 months now. And now started loosing power. Also started throwing black smoke. Pls advise. (My car is Renault Laguna 1.9 DCI Expression)

The black smoke worries me a bit. I know this is going to be tedeous but try to follow the oil back to it's point of origin. If there doesn't appear to be a leak see if there is something oily directly above the oil stain like a reservoir. Since the Laguna's engine bay is fairly full you may have to take a look underneath the car to see what's wrong. A ramp or inspection pit would be very nice. If that option is out you could put the car on axle stands to elevate the car to create room for you to get under it for a closer look.
Because of the black smoke I can only advise you NOT to drive your car until you know the cause of the oil leaks. Smoke is a sign of a very ill engine. How ill depends on what leaks and if the engine is losing oil.
PM me with your findings or if you have more questions.

Black smoke may indicate a turbo oil seal is the culprit and would also advise not to drive it, diesels can draw oil in to the combustion chamber past worn seals and rev up uncontrolably until a loud bang signals the end.

Expression huh? sounds more like Depression to me! Why the heck can't Renault make cars like they did once in a while? -R.

renault depression

seems to me like nobody can make anything anymore-or am i a grumpy old man- now if they put me in charge id --------------------

Thanks everyone for their reply. The car is now with the mechanic and he has decided to change the intercooler, turbo, cambelt (as it has done 85k) and the waterpump (depend?). Will keep u posted with the latest.

My car is being repaired and I need a new turbo of 100bhp. There is one available on ebay, however the turbo is for 120bhp. Is it okay to use 120bhp for a car of 100bhp. Pls advise. Thanks.

That would depend. The 120 bhp unit is capable of pushing more air into the engine. If you drive sensibly it shouldn't be that big a deal. Push it to the max regularly and it will hurt the engine.

Hiya, hope someone can help me.

I currently own a 2008 renault laguna, which i have had for the past couple of months. Just realised the car has oil leak, can be seen on the sump. Looking from the top everything looks fine but when looking underneath, it has fair amount of oil. The car does not smoke but figured some oil was also in the turbo breather pipe. Please help as i have spent lots of money on the car and local garage cannot figure out a problem. I have attached a picture.20150607_105532.jpg

Looking at the picture it appears the oil leak is emanating from the oil filter housing. The circular black plastic housing with the hexagonal drive on the end is the oil filter housing, inside which is the oil filter itself. When the oil filter is changed there are two rubber seals, which must also be changed. If they are not changed the filter housing will leak. in addition it is easy to cross-thread the filter housing when putting it back (I did it once!)

Before panicking and thinking the turbo is damaged I'd carry out an oil and oil filter change and while under the car carefully clean the area around the filter. Make sure the filter is correctly seated and fitted properly and that the correct grade of oil is added to the sump. Before starting the engine wipe the area clean and se if there's a leak before starting the engine. If there's no leak then start the engine & check for leaks around the filter.

Happy to offer more advice if needed!

I am very grateful for your reply and i will have that changed asap.

But is there meant to be little bit of oil in the turbo breather pipe?

Not from his point of view. We had a long chat on the phone & Imran took the car to a Renault specialist, who diagnosed a problem with the turbo. I should add that it's not also easy to diagnose a car's problems without seeing it "in the metal" and the advice I offered was with this caveat. The images Imran posted on the forum suggested an oil leak from around the filter housing, which is a problem I've encountered in cars with the newer type filter housings. He was grateful for my help and advice, even if it didn't turn out to be what I had thought it was!

I have his mobile number and I also work in the Luton area, so I might re in contact to see what the outcome was.

Cheers for that -- yes I'd be interested too in what the outcome was if you do find out.
