Proposal to ban modified cars in the EU

I've seen this on a few forums in the last day or so and I actually don't think its as bad as it seems. The ACE people have to make a big deal out of it to get people to do something although they do seem to go into meltdown about a lot of things tbh.

Seems that it would only affect cars under 30 years old and even then it looks as though it is aimed to stop none type approved parts being fitted.

It certainly doesn't seem to be the case that no none original parts whatsoever can be fitted and that cars have to be exactly as they left the factory which is how some are reporting it.

It was on the front of CCW the other week with a big panic headline but when you actually read the article it really didn't seem a big issue.

Time will tell I suppose...

I suspect we will end up with some sort of German MOT test which will be tougher but probably better and will get the worst modified stuff either off the roads or done properly (by bye cut springs and the like).

Preventing any part at all being a modified or none standard one would be near impossible.

This may be aimed at the boy racer end of the market, but it is going to be hard to enforce. It means that your MOT garage is going to have to be an expert on original equipment on every variation of every model made since 1982, including any approved modifications.

The ACE article is a bit of a rant, but it does stop short of some of the, frankly, preposterous histrionics that are still apearing in the Classic car press about removal of MOT's from pre 1960 cars.

Its a pity someone in the Classic Motoring Press can't focus on getting the rolling historic car tax status reinstated.
