Hi there we are replacing the spark plug leads on our 1984 R5 TX right hand drive 1397cc 5 speed Manuel R1229 carb weber 32DIR. I would like to confirm we have the correct ones install. We have 2 leads 320mm, 2 leads at 420mm and 1 lead at 845 attached is a photo.

Hi Jason and Amy

I have done some more research since we were last in contact and I have come up with the following part number for the ignition lead kit:

7701349467

Lengths of leads:

x2 325mm

x1 400mm

x1 425mm

The one from the distributor cap to the electronic ignition unit is: 470mm

Therefore the spark plug leads are very close in length to the ones you have provided (the leads in your photo are not original leads).

The biggest anomaly in length is obviously the one from the distributor cap to the electronic ignition unit. I'm thinking this issue is due to the fact that most Mark 1 Renault 5's did not have electronic ignition but a contact set (points) arrangement and did not require a long lead as the coil was not located so far away from the distributor.

I will see if I can find out further info on the longer lead.

Hi Thanks so much for the info very much appreciated.

Hi again

I thought I would look at the ignition lead sets for the mark 2 Renault 5 as a lot more of these had electronic ignition and I'm coming up with measurements of 600mm, 610mm and 625mm for the lead from the distributor cap to the electronic ignition. Still a lot shorter than your one. Im not coming up with anything as long as 845mm. As your leads are not original, I'm wondering if the electronic ignition unit was moved for some reason further away from where it was originally located on the vehicle. Does it look like it might have been moved? An image of where it is located in the engine bay would be useful, I or another member on this website could then confirm whether it is in the original position.

The leads on mine aren't original either. Yours look better than mine which are far too long between the distributor and spark plugs. Oddly the coil lead on mine has a similar strange routing to yours, snaking to the LHS of the engine bay and around to the ignition unit mounted behind the radiator. I don't know if that's the original routing or if it's just a way to lose some excess lead length.

Searching on over 2 dozen of French sites there are also over 2 dozen of different length sizes.

I think that most cables will do.

Hi again

I have come up with a set listed for your R5 with the following dimensions:

x2 380mm
x1 430mm
x1 480mm

and the distributor to coil lead is: 830mm

The make is FAE and the part number is: 83210.

Do a search on eBay France, the seller is called Sylvain.

Hi Chris I have attached a photo of where the leads are. looks like the coil lead would need to be about 845mm , my concussion is playing up a bit sorry your first name is Chris?
