Recalibrate Speedometer

Does anybody know if it's possible to recalibrate the speedo and how it is done if possible?

Seems like no-one has any ideas on this. There are companies that specialise in recalibrating speedometers. I guess it's possible, but for the likes of us it is trial and error.

I calibrated the speedometer of my TL by driving behind a friend in his modern car. We'd drive at a pre-arranged speed, then I would place a coloured sticker dot beside the needle. Next speed and another dot.

Interestingly, I've found that the GTL speedometer is completely accurate when running on 145/80 snow tyres (bigger than normal 145 tyres).

After that test, did you then recalibrate the speedo or just memorized the offset to know how fast you're going?
My idea is to reduce the pointer movement for example by making it show MPH on the KPH dial (a factor of 1.61). Do you thing that's possible?

I just left the speedo needle where it was and painted on new markings. It must be possible to reduce the sensitivity of the needle, but I don't know how it is done. The easiest way would probably be to talk to a specialist.

The R4 speedometer has that "not designed to be taken apart" look about it. It will probably work using spinning magnets on the shaft. On really old cars there tended to be a screw to adjust the distance between the magnets and the pickup. I should imagine the Renault parts will be fixed in place so you'd need to be a little more creative.

Thanks for the advice Clementine.
I guess I'll find myself a broken one and toy around with it for a while.
I'm kind of tired of "specialists" that take things apart an mess up the screws, brake things glue them back together and charge you a lot for learning with your stuff.
I'll let you know...
