Renault 4 distributor

Hi, we're new here but we've been lurking around for a little while. We need a new distributor for our 1986 Renault 4 GTL. The Femsa that's one there melted the springs inside and the points. The car still runs but the points now need changing every 50 miles, if that. So think it's time for a new distributor, but we're having problems tracking one down. Does anyone know where we can find one?

Hello there, you could try Derek Flavell of Renospeed. Derek is a very useful chap to know, and keeps a good stock of secondhand parts. I think a new distributer is going to be hard to find. A good idea is to replace the Femsa dizzy with a Ducelier one, which can be converted to electronic ignition.

Regards, Brian.

there are a few new ones on ebay.fr look under 'allumeur renault 4' bit pricy though. also some used ones on le bon coin

Oh well, that's me proved wrong, new dizzies are still around. Actually after I said they might be hard to find I checked the Der Franzose catalogue and they have some listed there for the R4, as does Melun Retro Passion. Derr, idiot moment!! :?Anyway, good luck with your quest.

Regards, Brian.

thank you! Sorry for the late reply, life got in the way of our quest. We'll check out your suggestions :)

Welcome C L Raven, not many 4Ls in Wales that I know of so it's good to hear of another.
If you're replacing the distributor anyway, take a look at the 123-Ignition fully electronic distributor - it's supposed to be much better even than a good Ducellier with an electronic conversion, and probably works out cheaper too.

Let us know how it goes with a new distributor :)

Today I replaced my SEV cartridge distributer for a 123-Ignition.
It cost me an arm and e leg but it certainly makes quite a difference. My 956 cleon starts just by touching te key and it runs very smooth now.
Top speed was higher then I was used to. Up till now quite happy with the result.

Merry Christmas everybody

Just followed the manual. Placing it is not very different as to putting in a regular distributer.

Hi, thanks :) we actually have two R4s - a 1984 and a 1986 one. So far, we haven't had much luck with the distributor - life keeps getting in the way! We're back on the quest now though :)

the 123 ignition site looks promising. They're asking for the curve size though. How do we find this out? We were planning to switch over to electronic ignition as points are becoming scarce and 123's distributors would save us having to do that.

very early mark 2 renault 5 distributors with the 1100 cc engine are nearly all ducellierand work very well and have the benefit of externally adjustable points and the electronic conversion would bolt into any of this typethe advance curve is related to the numbers on the side of the distributor and officially should be exactly right 4 the engine code on your car that that was all in the days when we had proper 4 star petrol so some adjustment is needed to compensate for unleaded

Hi there, Aldon also do an electronic ignition conversion for the Ducellier dizzy for the 1108 cc engine. I fitted one a while back and it's still giving good service. The part number is EP141, price approx £80.

Hi Raven did you have any joy with curves?

I changed my electronic Femsa dizzy for a Ducellier dizzy (non-electronic). Easy to change. Loads out there but very difficult to find a R 244 D61 Ducellier.

It took me 1 year to find a R244D61, even then it was only the bottom half and had to buy points and cap.

The R244D61 is the one that should be in my car according to Haynes an other manuels.

I was tempted with the 1-2-3 but it was a little pricey.

if its like mine 1984 R4 TL according to Haynes and Angels print off of curves book (previous post) you need the R244 D61 curve setting on the 1-2-3.

It is on the 1-2-3, as I investigated.

Bonne Courage
