Renault 4 TV documentary

Hi everyone
Firstly, to be honest I don't have a Renault 4. The last time I drove one I'd just passed my test and that was 25 years ago, but I'm about to be spending a lot more time with them.
Renault are launching their own TV channel - much like The Audi Channel on Sky. The team I work with are making all sorts of Renault related programmes to go on this channel but it won't hit the satellites until September, however some of the first shows made are available to view here
if you navigate to the Entertainment section you'll find some shows called 'Me & My Renault', where there's a short film about Nick Hewer (Alan Sugar's left hand man on The Apprentice) and his adventures in his R4. Some of the films we are making are not bad - EIISSMS -some are! (they're very corporate and advertorial)

Cutting to the chase; I've already made a 50 minute documentary all about the Renault 5 (which will soon be on the website) and I've now been asked to make one about the 4, starting now. It will be a genuine enthusiasts film exploring not only the concept, engineering and manufacture of the 4, but also why this car was so important to society in the 1960s, and why it continues to be so warmly regarded. For this I wll be persuing R4 enthusiasts on both sides of the channel - so I may well end up pointing a camera at one or two of you out there some time in the near future - as long as you're up for it of course.

There's no chance a major channel would ever commission a programme so narrowly focused on one car model so this is a fairly unique opportunity to do this great car justice with a really warm and informative film. So - watch this space!

Sounds fantastic, as a life long supporter of Renaults products it will be great to see a programme focusing on our favourite car.

Theo-What a nice Homage to such a nice little car! had a look at the R4-film..They are a trustworthy bit of kit seemingly wherever you take them..
there was a very short notice in Thorougbread & Classic Cars mag.Oct-97 about Leslie and Jerry Neary of Lutterworth,Leics that in August-72 took their R4L across Europe over the alps to Greece into Turkey and Iran to Afghanistan via Khyber Pass to Pakistan and India.Boat to Malaysia then to Fremantle Aussieland.then to San Francisco driving throught USA they went off to Canada after which they returned to S'hmpton.
After this initial 'run-in' they used the 4L to both the Arctic Circle (Norway?) and to North Africa
Looks like the reg.No is (was) HLH572K
-Here's your chance to do some research for another possibly good story on the Renault4..............................

There can't be any easier car to make a good story on than the R4
as per definition ALL R4-stories is a GOOD one right? c",)

What happened to this 4L? Does it still exist?
Look forward to see much more Renault-stuff Especially on the workhorse in the family -The R4 -R.

Thanks for that note, it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. i'll certainly make a few calls.

As part of the resource for this film I have access to Renault's incredible Historic Collection kept at the Flins factory outside Paris, which consists of about 600 Renaults from across all 111 years. They have about 15 or more 4s in there, a couple of which, I believe, have been around the world on epic adventures. I'll look into who did those journeys.

Glad you liked the Nick Hewer film. I'm putting the finishing touches to another similar film with him that's more of the same really, but that's no bad thing.

Any one else got any nuggets of inspiration?

Renault 4L Registered HLH 572K

Hi Reidar/ Theo, :) Ive just checked the DVLA website (vehicle enquiry) and this transcontinental TL is definately still a survivor :!: and currently taxed until end of August 09. The record indicates that it was first registered 16/5/72, a white coloured 845cc. ;)

Hey-that's Great news! -would have such been a shame if it hadn't been taken care of -I remember reading they were looking for someone to possibly take care of it back in -97.. Thanx Much for info -R.

HLH 672 alias 'YOKIBUS'

Bonnuit Reidar et Theo, I managed to contact Mr & Mrs Neary and they still have their remarkable white R4L called 'Yokibus' (now 145,000 miles). They lived in their 4L for a year 'on the road' and had an incredible/epic global journey - quite amazing.
Yokibus is precious to this lovely couple and I'm sure we can help them to maintain and preserve this faithful 4, which many owners traditionally named 'little friend'. ;) Yokibus presently has a gtl bonnet and a correct replacement is wanted - happily, our leader Malcolm does have an original spare. Hopefully we'll hear a lot more thanks to our remarkable and resourceful Reidar - I bet he remembers and can recite verbatum all those viking sagas as well.
