Renault 4gearbox reassemble

Hello, I have made the schoolboy error of taking my Renault 4 to The Smallest Cog in Herefordshire as there was a problem with it jumping out of first gear. I live on the crest of a hill and trying to turn into the drive when the car decided that neutral was the place to be was not so funny. I contacted the garage and they seemed quite keen to fix it so I let them have it. Some months later they have removed the gearbox, sent it “away” to be fixed and informed we that there didn’t seem to be a problem. However the box was now in many, many pieces and it would be £200 to reassemble it-with no suggestion that this would have made any diffence, as they had no idea what the problem might be(could be the engine mountings mate).
I’m not anxious to let them fiddle about any more and am looking for someone(anyone) competent to put the box back together and then fix the original problem.
if you know anyone who might fit that Bill and isn’t too far away I would love to hear about them.
thanks,Peter

Hi Peter

I'm sorry to hear of the situation. Renault 4 gearboxes are generally pretty reliable. However, in terms of working on them they are quite particular. I think you are going to find it tricky to find a specialist prepared to take the job on (they are not keen on taking on a job that someone has already started> dismantled gearbox).

It might be wiser and cheaper if you source a used gearbox. Check the parts for sale on this website (old ads). There is also somebody selling an R4gtl engine on ebay. It has a gearbox attached to it but the seller is not selling it with the engine (possibly selling it separately). Just do a search for 'Renault 4 engine. It should come up.

You could try Paul Cunningham (Worthing): 01903 233476
or Derek Flavell (Renospeed, now in Cornwall: 07816 586642)

Just keep in mind that there are 4 types of gearboxes depending on year of make and model of your R4.

Either the 313, 328 and 334 gearbox

Or the square 354 gearbox with his many variations (indices)

And there is 1 extra special gearbox for the Sinpar but that's rare.

I feel a bit like Alice in wonderland now-so many gearboxes, so little knowledge! I will have to do some more research to see what I have got-thanks for the help everybody!

If you have a gtl it will be a 354. If it is still there, there is a circular metal plate bolted to the top of the gearbox with the three digit number on it.

Again keep in mind that depending on year of make and model of your R4 a L or TL also can have a 354 gearbox but are not interchangeable with a GTL 354 gearbox,
They can easily be made interchangeable, or you can put your old gearbox back together yourself after all, it really isn't rocket science.
If I where you I would call Paul or Derek.
