Villiers powered cultivator

My grandfather was a blacksmith and he was well known for fixing mechanical things. One of his creations was this Villiers powered cultivator. This was made well before cultivators became more available over here, I recon it was made 30-35 years ago. The engine is Villiers that used to power water pump in the mine in the 1960. I think the gearbox comes from a Citroen but I am not sure, the wheels are of Zastava 750.

I still use it from time to time but it has almost no spark so I use battery to provide the spark. Does anybody has any experience with these engines and what could be wrong with the spark?

Hi John, I can see your grandfather knew his stuff when it came to things mechanical, what a great creation his cultivator is. Am I right in saying the engine has magneto ignition? If so at a guess the mag could be at fault, and needs an overhaul. Brian.
Check out www.villiersparts.co.uk for magneto spares, and engines parts in general.

Hello John, yes I think that the mag is most likely to be the cause of the problem. There are loads of these engines still in use over here, lots of them in classic motorbikes, and their website seems to cover most parts, so I'm pretty sure they can help you. Sorry we didn't get to meet at Thenay, but I did spot your friends' 4L parked at the campsite.

Hello John, nice to see your grandads' creation in use. I take it you managed to sort out the ignition problem. But then I noticed you mention the car battery. Never mind, the old Villiers still sounds good n healthy.
