Yellow Headlights

Out of interest, is there any modern car fitted with yellow headlights, even as an option?

Xenon headlights are considered white, despite of having a blueish tint.

I don't think so but my neighbour's modern Fiat 500 came with yellow auxiliary lights (low down in the bumper, so I assume they're fog lights).

The rules for lights lower than 400mm (generally "under the bumper" lamps) are different to those for the car's ordinary lights. These lights may be either white OR yellow BUT the important point is that they can only be used "in conditions of fog or falling snow". On most recent cars the car's switching puts the front fog lights (if fitted) on BEFORE the rear fog lamps, and usually are automatically switched off when the car's side lights are turned off, thus setting the car's lights back to "normal" next time they're switched on.

Cars registered before September 1965 (yes, we all own one of those-well, we might....) once the sidelights are switched on, are allowed to have ONE white spot lamp to the offside and ONE yellow fog lamp to the nearside. The thinking was that the yellow fog lamp on the nearside would light the pavement, so pedestrians would be visible, and the white spot lamp would "slice through" the fog, with a pencil-like beam, alerting on-coming drivers to the car's presence. I should explain that I'm over 60 years old, and I've NEVER driven a vehicle with this lighting combination in fog, so I can't comment on how effective (or ineffective...) it is!

Can you use LED bulbs in reflector headlights?
Simply put: yes. LEDs can be used in reflector headlights, BUT (and this is an important BUT) if you replace the bulb, you also need to replace the reflector. If you don't, you could blind other road users, or the light output is too low

Keep in mind the R4 headlights have a reflector and are designed for filament lightbulbs to operate correctly NOT for LED lamps, so just stick to the original.

Another factor to bear in mind is that the use of yellow headlights is restricted to a specific yellow colour, called "selective" yellow and not just any old yellow light. There's precise scientific definition of Selective Yellow:

It's this specific colour that is permissible in yellow headlights, although the rules form yellow fog lamps are different again (!) I would suggest the best way to obtain the quintessentially "French" look is to buy yellow bulbs, as sold up until 1993 in France. I'm not convinced L.E.D.s "cut the mustard" in classic cars.

I sell the yellow equivalent of 410 bulbs (with the round fitting) on my website.
I used to do the halogen ones with a separate glass cover but Autolamps stopped making them a year or so ago.

Hi. I've used these bulb covers before, and while they work well, they however, over time seem to get brittle. I had one break while resetting the bulb position after my trip to Italy last year. Now I've gone back to 45w yellow bulbs which are fine, because to be honest I don't use the 4 in the dark much.
