Car only runs with vacuum pipe removed!

I didn't do the work on the head but my neighbour says he trusts the guy who did the head! I'm going to have another tinker with it during the week and maybe I'll check the compression whilst I'm at it! Will keep you posted.

Car only runs with vacuum pipe removed!

Sorry for late reply but only just got around to tinkering! I changed the points and because I wasn't sure that the vacuum spiggot pipe coming out of the carb was sucking properly I decided to lift the carb off and check. It was clear but what I did find was a chunk of the gasket was missing...

Car only runs with vacuum pipe removed!

Thanks for that. I gapped the points and when I was doing that I thought they didn't look right! As if the contact had fallen off one side? I'll check them later.

Car only runs with vacuum pipe removed!

Runs like a bag of spanners with vacuum pipe connected. Disconnect and it runs great. Suck the tube and engine note falters (so advance/retard would seem to be working) put finger over over tube on carb (the one I disconnected the vacuum pipe from) and nothing happens. Can this be blocked...

    No tickover

Couldn't find a setting screw for the choke and couldn't see how it could be affecting the butterfly closure! Turned the dizzy clockwise until tickover was low enough but coughed a little when revved up. Turned back dizzy and got a happy (well, less than really) medium. Not taken it out on the...

    No tickover

Haha, yes, a strobe and before I threw the pipe away and with the vacuum pipe disconnected! Will look for choke setting later.

    No tickover

Thanks again. Will try to make a restrictor but I'm wondering if it's really necessary as emissions won't be checked as it's now a classic? Didn't know anything about the choke fast idle setting!!! Will have a look tomorrow. When I did the timing I took the unleaded setting into account as per...

    No tickover

You hero! That cured it! Thank you. Problem is that I ditched the old tube with the restrictor. Are they still available? If not what does the restrictor look like? I'm sure I could make one! The other problem I'm left with is it's ticking over too fast. The throttle stop is backed right off...

    No tickover

Cheers, will try that later. There is definitely no restricted in there!

    No tickover

Thanks Andy, sorry, yes it's a 321F. All is clean! Where is the idle jet! Don't think anything has fallen out! All tubes to carb have been renewed.

    No tickover

Hi all, not been on here for ages due to events beyond my control meaning I had to leave the Yellow Peril parked up for 18 months. When I finally got her started after renewing points, plugs, condenser and resetting the timing she just won't tickover. To keep her running I have to either have...

    Bushes

Does anybody know the part numbers for the upper suspension bushes on a 1985 model and the cheapest place to buy them?

    R4 4x4?

Just had an email from a Spanish guy asking if I knew of a kit to convert an R4 into 4x4. From what I can gather with my limited Spanish he reckons that 4x4's were produced up until the 80's with this conversion (and in R6 and R12 models too!) for the services. I haven't heard of this. Does...

    Front wheel bearing numbers

Hello peeps, does anyone know the front wheel bearing numbers as stamped into the bearing shell? Eg, 32005x and 32004 which are the rear bearing numbers. Had to change the rear ones in a hurry today which cost €35 (one side) when I could have got them from "the bearing station" for £2.95 plus...

    Long time no see

Hi Tim, yes it's been torrential here in the normally sunny Andalucia!! In fact, the yellow peril konked out yesterday after taking in water via the petrol cap!! Regarding your handbrake if the van is the same as the car there is a 10mm nut that is accessed through a hole at the back of the...

    Long time no see

Hello peeps, not been on for ages thro' one thing and many others!!! Still here in not so sunny Spain and the yellow peril is still going strong as my daily transport. She's due her mot in April and I need both track rod ends if some kind soul can point me in the right (ie, cheap) parts...

    Still here!

...the recession has hit here too! Coupled with the exchange rate it has really slowed things down. Many people have gone back to the UK as their pensions etc aren't worth what they used to be! Prices have gone up considerably too, it's certainly not a cheap place to live anymore! The saving...

    Still here!

Hi Malcom, yes I suppose I am settled here now; believe it or not it's just over 3 years since I left the UK!!!! I still have the Pajero but it's up for sale, I bought it cheap because the head had gone, a common fault on the 2.8's. However, after wieghing up the pros and cons the "yellow peril"...
