Hi all

I know this subject has been covered before but having a few nice days has inspired me to fit my twingo sunroof. I will be going down the same route as the lads from Belgium by making a template from the original sheet metal. I have dismantled the roof cut and found the construction of the sunroof quite simple. the roof section has been cut down to a manageable size and I am now contemplating the exact location for the fitting. centre lines drawn and test fit measures up really well. as for the initial cut... I don't know whats gonna be best, nibbler, grinder with 3mm cutting disc or a jigsaw? I plan to cut straight-lines first then use the jigsaw for the fiddly bits. after using the old roof frame as a template, I carefully marked out the opening. weapon of choice, nibbler using a guide for the straight cuts......

no going back now, cuts went well. used the nibbler for the fiddly bits to, its quite easy to control, no fire risk, just a load of swarf to clean up

cleaned and straightened some rough areas with a flap disk. re-installed headlining (temp) mainly to stop zinc primer going on my seats, and the paint will mark my area of headlining to cut out. I will be using the original headlining and the twingo trim bits on the interior. once cut, I will prep and paint the headlining and sunvisors grey to match the sunroof trim (plus the seats have some grey in too). not going to seal the sunroof in as I will be respraying the car in the near future. http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/att...ment.php?attachmentid=8277&stc=1&d=1366917478

Looks brilliant, can't wait to see the finished result. I really want to do this to mine too, my favourite memory is of being in the back of my Dads, 4 and 6 when I was little and being able to see the sky whilst bowling aorund the green lanes of Shropshire!

Love it!

ok, sunroof dropped in (near enough!) just needed a little fettling on the rear corners to fit in nice. good tight fit. http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/att...chmentid=8279&stc=1&d=1366997709&d=1366997675
now for bolting down. first piece was the hardest-needed an assistant to push the frame down. start on the rear section in the middle and work out to the corners- hardest part as the r4 roof has more curvature than the twingo- move to the front and do the same with the front bar- middle to the corners. looking good, time for a test opening!http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/att...ment.php?attachmentid=8283&stc=1&d=1366997854
tighten all the 12mm nuts, job done.
now for the front spoiler. this forms an integral seal for the front of the sunroof so it has to go on. not a great fit at the ends due to the curvature but hay-ho, I will address the after the car is painted. fit new aerial at the rear ( very euro! ) the actual aerial is of a laguna soooo....http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/att...ment.php?attachmentid=8285&stc=1&d=1366997953
now for the finishing bits, cut down the headlining to refit over the new opening, doesn't need to be to tidy as the edges will be covered up by the twingo roof trims. trial fit looks ok.http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/att...ment.php?attachmentid=8287&stc=1&d=1366998008

nearly there now, just painted up and filled some holes in the headlining and sunvisors- these come up really well, fit an add the twingo trims and that's it! the rear trim needs some attention as there is more curvature than the twingo so its not sitting so well, but it will be an easy fix.

next, replace nsf headlight for mot and hit the road at the end of the weehttp://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=8300&stc=1&d=1367332335k!!! http://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=8301&stc=1&d=1367332418

Shame you couldn't get a complete roof as you then get all the headlining to use in your 4.

Apart from that and a few guts to make the first cut then it's plain sailing...

not bad price for new (£800 from Renault)-but like pepper said, try get the whole roof, trims and template. must be loads in French scrap yards. look to pay 80 to 100 euros all in.

If anyone sees a roof going for sale then let me know. I will start searching the local scapyards.

I will practise on the GTL and if all goes well will do the TL as well.

Hi

How did you manage to fix these pieces of twingo trims, longer ones?
These days just completed same job and still I am thinking for the solution.
Thanks!

little squares of Velcro tape, no. full length Velcro tape, no. gonna resort to the original fixing, a semi flexible non drying grey or black mastic type product like sikaflex...I will let you know how it goes!!!

Nice
Recently I have found an original one from a r4 only for 50 euro with a complete roof cut off the car , unfortunately on the other side of Poland and no one wanted to transport such a big thing in a reasonable price.

Good luck fitting it

4GTL Sun Roof Install

I finally got my Twingo Sunroof from a guy in Toulouse. I was about to get stuck in to de-installing it when he said he would do it. I didn't get the roof as a template but a good bag of parts and all the inside panels. All for €80.

I quite like the colour too which is a purply kinda shade - will match the new paint job great.

I made a template out of cardboard and lay it out on the roof after putting in centre lines etc (great tutorial above by the way)

Untitled by Tripyrenees, on Flickr

I then drilled all the holes using the template and then sitting the sunroof on just to make sure. There is a lot of tolerance on the roof as I found out later when I had to enlarge some of the holes.

I then cut out the template for the roof hole

Untitled by Tripyrenees, on Flickr

I used a jigsaw with a metal blade. I also left the headlining in as I tried to get this out but it was glued on to the roof with foam so I made more of a mess that way. So decided to cut the roof liner in situ which seemed to work.

Untitled by Tripyrenees, on Flickr

Bit of a fiddle getting all the holes to match up and this was mainly due to me being too picking on the tolerances - I widened some of the holes and all was fine -

I have to finish off the inside but I will be removing it all to carry out the new paint job over the next few weeks. But so far, the first job is complete. :D
