We had a similar problem a week or so ago, but luckily it's just a smallish chip, not spreading (yet). Autoglass said they could repar it over the phone, but couldn't when they arrived as the damage was too close to the edge of the glass. They made some calls and came back with the ominous word 'obselete'! So, not good news. I'm going to try and track down a decent independent windscreen specialist, otherwise the only option I've found so far is..

99 euros, collect only, from Germany!

Good luck!

Autoglass fitted a new screen to my Gordini a couple of weeks ago. If you can have it done under the insurance it's worth calling them. (Otherwise come up here via Steve and I'll do it cheaper (or if the insurance is paying more expensively)).

I do have a brand new genuine screen if you get stuck. However, I have always advised people to get your local friendly glass company to cut you one from the pattern out of lamnated glass. Only problem is that you have to fit it!!

It's not difficult to fit if you follow a few simple rules

I'm in need of a new windscreen as well.

On the idea of having one made, Does anyone know if I was to get one made by a glass shop if it would be ok for insurance / MOT purposes or should it have some logos etc saying its laminated ?

Also would be keen to hear the simple rules :)

As long as it's laminated and the correct thickness then there is no problem.

There is plenty of info on the web about windscreen fitting.

Wow that doesn't sound bad. Will have to see if I can get one here :(, Failing that down to the glass shop I go :)

(Wont be for a while but will post how it goes)

Thought there might be some special tricks for R4 screens I guess just standard methods are fine then ?

Here is the method I use and can be used for the rear screen and the rear side windows.

To remove a laminated screen you need one tool - a screwdriver!! This is used to lift up the plastic filler from the screen rubber at one end - then just carefully pull it out of the rubber. Then you need some 1/8" pop rivets. Pull the rubber down from the inside of the car and force the pop rivet between the rubber and the flange so that the rubber is not making a seal. Do this every 2" around the top half of the screen and half way down the two sides. Gently push the screen outwards using even pressure and it will come away from the body without cracking.

Remove the rubber and thoroughly clean all traces of sealant from it including the aperture on the car. Use paraffin or white spirit and the thoroughly dry all the areas that you have cleaned. Make sure the new screen is clean and fit the rubber onto the screen. Do this on a table or on a piece of plywood. Turn the screen over and insert a length of nylon cord into the rubber all the way round and overlap it at the bottom. Offer the screen to the body and make sure the loose ends of the cord are inside of the car. If possible, get a friend to apply gentle pressure to the screen. Begin by pulling the cord at right angles towards the centre of the screen - you will see that this lifts the rubber over the flange. Carry on doing this evenly using both halves of the cord - don't rush and gently tap the screen with the palm of your hand to allow the rubber to centralise. Finally remove the cord and tap the screen all the way round until you're satisfied that it's gone fully home.

Using some 3M windscreen sealer and a gun (or something similar) seal between the body and the rubber and then seal between the screen and the rubber. This is messy so remove as much of the surplus sealer as you can. Then fit the screen rubber filler - this will have the effect of squeezing out even more sealant. There is a special tool to make fitting the filler easier. Clean up thoroughly and remove all traces of sealant from the glass and the body.

Job done.

My screen cracked amost immediately - lots of chips near the edge destroyed it. (Was hoping to flip it around as it was not quite an mot failure on the passenger side!)

Cateracts on windscreen

I'm losing heart. And Money :(

My little car passed its MOT today. But, I asked Derek at Renospeed to fit a windscreen I bought from one of the team as the original crack (above) was spreading and would have failed.

Good news was that Derek discovered and treated a small rust patch under the seal.

Bad news was that the new windscreen has permanent smears that became visible in situ. I need to replace again. There was no way of telling - the seller had stored securely and Derek thinks that the packaging may have reacted with the glass to form a mild acid 'etching'.

AND RENAULT NO LONGER MANUFACTURE WINDSCREENS!

To cheer me up I decided to think up some slogans. Here goes

Small and prefectly FOURmed
FOURfront
FOURmost

I got mine for £30 from a local glass supplier, maybe there is money to be made in getting several cut and selling them :) !

Thanks

I'm taking a template to my local glass supplier tomorrow - he says he can do.

Yours seems a very fair price. I hope I'm that lucky!

Best wishes.

Mark

 Drat! London prices! - my local dealer said he'd send template off - £80!!

Can you give me the name of your man in Wokingham? I can give him a template on brown paper or card and collect - nice drive from Bromley!

Thanks.

Mark

Will sort out address later, I used my old screen as a template, its still here if you want to borrow it ?

Hi and thank you!

I have an unusable windscreen (off the car) and have made a cardboard template too! If your local man was willing he could keep a template become an official suppier to forum members in the South! Anything to help local businesses! At that price I'm tempted to have a spare too!

Incidentally, Derek at Renospeed showed me an F6 windscreen - I couldn't believe how different it was are from the car version!

Will PM separately.

Thanks again.

Weird, I knew everywhere said they were different but didn't realise they were much different. I would definately say to take your old windscreen along if you have it.

Worth ringing around a few local places and asking about laminate glass cutting. I will try and find the place I went tomorrow.

Regards,
Andrew

I find it amazing that a local glass cutter can't cut a piece of laminate glass. I'm probably living in the past, but at one point in my life I fitted windscreens and whenever somebody needed a flat screen cut from laminated glass it was done on the premises by somebody who cut domestic glass.

Lay laminate on cutting table, offer old screen or template to glass, use felt tipped pen to mark out shape, use glass cutter to score the glass. Go over score with felt tipped pen, turn glass over score the other side along the felt tipped line. Score waste glass and gently break off until you have your screen. Chamfer edge of screen - job done!!

Rocket science or should I bow out gracefully!!!!????

Irony is we live four miles from Crystal Palace! Now THEY really knew a thing or two about glass!

... PS Don't you dare bow out Steve!!!
