A week of joy then the pully seized

ahhhhhh... after many mishaps and the best part of 2 months, the car was flying - for 10 days. Today I had to bale out the water from just a 20-minute drive (being in the car I now have a suspicion as to wherefrom - more on that to follow), on the return to the farm (800metres from home) a nauseous, pungent smell appeared. I think the belt pully bearing has seized. The belt shredding, melting and hot, the pully burnt my friend's inquisitive thumb - so my beloved (hmmf) once again sits at the opposite end of the farm to where she should be. any advice re replacing bearings, and or pullies?

If it's the belt tensioner pulley bearing, it's a straightforward job to replace it if you have circlip pliers and a puller.

Here's a way of doing it:




You can use the old bearing to press the new one home.
If your tensioner is an earlier type (probably not the case), it's depressingly easy to damage the pulley with the puller!

Is it for your GTL? If so, it'd probably be easier - and cheaper - to get a good secondhand tensioner:

If the second photo is the tensioner fitted on your car, it cannot be repaired because the pulley is crimped around the bearing. You have to find the earlier style pulley with removable bearing.
