At the last MoT back in August, I was told I have a pinhole in one of the drive shaft gaiters. I can no longer do such jobs but wondered if my local garage could manage it. The car is a 1986 GTL. Naturally, I'm keen they don't totally muck things up. Also, do we recommend universal gaiters or R4 specific parts, and should I get them all changed? I live in the West Midlands. Many thanks.

Just changed inner side. Sasic part no: 4003454....will see how long will last. But that side of the shaft is not in motion so much so i believe it will last.

Outher side i have put universal Beren and they last second year now. Before them i have changed few manufacturers and they did not last long

For the outer joint I have been using GKN Flexboots part no. 190964 for some time and it works very well. It's stretchy so will pass over the CV joint with the aid of a plastic cone, no need to disassemble inner joint.

Many thanks, jolly useful. Is it a job any half decent local, trustworthy garage could manage without major risk of mucking things up?

Have a look at my post ‘Beer and drive boots’ https://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/threads/beer-and-drive-boots.9026/#post-61173
It’s not so difficult to do yourself if you want to have a go. Even without the professional tools.
See the post - the SKF gaiters I bought have proven to be superb. They are very good quality - I think I bought them from Mr Auto as recommended by our fab forum friend Mr Reno
