What have I done! (R4 GTL)

Today was D day.

Radiator change on menu

But before that i decided to flush cooling system with Liqui Moly

Bottle is enought for 10 liters. R4's cooling system is cca 4 liters so I had enough for two flushing.
Third flush i have done with destiled water.

After flushing i take off old radiator and put new one.

Here, everithing is finished already.
New radiator in place, antifriz put inside, system bleeded, ventilator is happily start to spin at 94-95°

Fresh pink antifriz inside bottle. Will see how long will stay pink.

Also used oportunity to make new rubber stripe for bottle. Out of troley wheel inner tube

Hey petak nice job, but pink antifreeze is not ideal for older style car engines, it's designed for modern engines. Use the old fashioned blue or green type coolant if you can get either. Just saying :whistle:

It used to matter when the radiators were brass or copper, or aluminium.
This car modern aluminium radiator and heater matrix is aluminium too, so i wouldn't worry about it too much ;)

Cornish4...... Actually i could not find antifriz normative for R4 so i used glacelf classic (he is pink) recomended for older cars. I think it has G12 norme (vw name for normative)
Unfortunatelly you can not rely on colour of the antifriz as reference.

But certainly would like to put right kind of antifriz.

Yesterday was steering rack day.

Changed one in car with serviced one that i have done earlier.

Toughest part was to take old one out of the engine bay and push in new one.

I get rid of that klink-klank noise at right wheel side, and car is more direct to steering wheel.

It is again pleasure to drive it.

P.S. I am at about 70tkm since back on the road.

Cut it out, changed conectors, cleaned pin and thinking how and where to put headlights relay as i am using H4 (stronger than standard) bulbs.
I believe that is reason for this situation.

Lost clock for a moment and deep beams light in same time. Got it back really soon but some time after noticed burned smell and really hot fuse box cover. I could not hold my hand to it.

And whole day was really hot more than 38°C on shade. Above 40 at sun

It might be better to fit a relay to control the lights, as you're using more powerful halogen bulbs. Using the dip switch to control a relay leans it would handle hardly any current and would allow more current to reach the lights, making them a little brighter. Happy to advise if you're not sure how to wire them up.

Yes. Andrew. I was fulish believing that nothing will hapened but reley seems like wise job to do.
Happy to hear your sugestion how and where to put relay.
I only want it located inside cabin under the dash. I do not want to be in engine bay.

This shouldn't be a problem. First, make sure the car's wiring is exactly as the manufacturer's design, so you know where you're staring from! The original wiring has the dip switch dividing the power between the main or dipped beam. We're going to change all that..... You'll need 2 relays, some wire and some connectors!

1/ Pull the 2 wires that send the current to the main and dipped beam away from the dip switch and remember which one is which!
2/ Find a space under the dashboard able to accommodate the 2 relays and attach them to the bulkhead with self-tapping screws.
3/ Make up 2 short lengths of wire, long enough to go from the dip switch to the relays and connect one from the DIPPED beam terminal on the dip switch to a relay and one from the MAIN beam terminal on the dip switch to the other relay, in both cases connecting it to the SWITCH terminal on the relay. Make up 2 short leads to run from the other side of the switch side of the relay to earth and fit them. You can earth them on the self tapping screws holding the relays to the bulkhead.
4/ At this stage, as a test, switch the headlights on and operate the dip switch; you should hear the 2 relays clicking on and off as you move the dip switch from main to dipped beam. If you do-good! If not, check your wiring!
5/ Connect the 2 wires you pulled away from the dip switch at stage one to the 2 relays (make sure they're the right way round, or you'll be dipping when you think you're main beaming and vice verca!)
6/ Run a thick wire from the point where the feed to the dip switch receives its power and join it to the power side of the 2 relays. Fitting an inline fuse of 16 amps would be a good thing, too.

What you now have is a dip switch that switches on or off 2 relays, which are fed power from a separately fused supply of current, so the dip switch will be handling very little power and the lights will have their power delivered through relays, thus reducing losses.

There are also headlamp relays available, they combine both relays in one unit, plus separate fuses for main and dipped beam. It's a must for me.
Yes, that's a better way to do it, but more complex, so I was keeping things simple. No insult to anyone's abilities implied or suggested!

Thank you Andrew....i am not "home" with wiring but must carefull read your instructions step by step and try to draw schematics of headlights relay addition and i will get it. After that it is pure work.

Aldo there are ups and downs in my life with R4 we are gathering kilometers unstoppable.
