    Electronic ignition question

Personally I like Boyer Bransden. They're one of the pioneers of electronic ignition and have had a great reputation for reliability since the 1970s. I've used their points-assisted system on my own and customers cars (& I sell it on my website).

    Headlamps.

It's the fitting of most French (& other European) cars of the mid sixties to mid eighties: P45t The other type that became popular since the eighties when more cars had halogen bulbs for dip & main headlights, was P43t (also referred to as H4, the H being for halogen). Halogen bulbs are also...

    Breakdown cover

Having always had agreed value classic insurance on all my older cars for the last 26 years, UK & EU breakdown cover has been included. I've used it twice and it's been very good. On my Subaru Forester (too young for a classic policy) I had RAC cover and needed it when the radiator blew last...

    F4 van wanted

Have a word with Gary Dicks of 2cv Imports. (He doesn't only import 2cvs). He's in Somerset. Or have a look in the classics for sale section of RetroSpec Parts. (There's no R4 vans on there at the moment but they do come up).

    Renault 4gtl 1984

You don't see many Renaults with hydropneumatic spheres under the bonnet! (Your first photo).

    Head lamp bulbs

In the UK mot, they check that the headlights work, they check the colour, (white or yellow is allowed), they check that the patterns are correct and that they're correctly aligned. That's it. They don't check the wattage of any bulbs

"... the previous owner seems to have stripped the points adjusting thread ..." If you mean the threads on the adjuster bolt/screw inside the spring, then you can easily replace just that (& the nut). If you mean the points retaining screw, that goes into the base plate, why not drill & thread...

Customs Duty on parts from Italy

Nicely explained Andrew. About 80% of my website sales used to be to the EU. Now that's almost entirely gone since we left because of huge additional costs now, when EU customer buy from me. Most of my sales were around £20 or less and would fit in "large letter" size. Before brexit, such a...

    Head lamp bulbs

As Andrew says, P45t are the correct ones and there are many options: Halogen 60/55w, clear or with a yellow glass cover, 6v or 12v. Halogen 100/80, 100/90 or 130/100w. Original tungsten 45/40w, clear or yellow, 6v or 12v. (I keep all of the these in stock apart from the highest wattage, the...

    6v wiper motor wanted

Hi. Does anyone have a 6v wiper motor they want to sell (& post to Worthing, Sussex)? I actually need it for a 1966 2cv van but think some Renaults (incl R4) used the same SEV Marchal "pepperpot" motor, like the one in my photo. (I don't need the mounting bracket or linkage). Thank you

    Which model

There's a RHD 1987 Renault 4 van for £4500 in the 'Classics for Sale' section of my website, RetroSpec Parts. (I know nothing about it other than what the owner asked my to put in his advert).

    Turning the engine over

It's not at all likely that your crank is seized. It's much more likely that the piston rings are a bit rusted and stuck to the bore. Use a little diesel fuel as suggested, (or a 50/50 mix of acetone & ATF).

    European emissions standards and R4s

Your statement about your garage being "very creative with their positioning of the exhaust probe" reminded me of the time I took a friend's Fiesta in for an MOT for her. It failed on emissions and they said it would need a new catalytic converter. The tester was sympathetic when I explained...
